On 12 August, a group of talented Verdon College students proudly represented the school at the annual NZAS Southland Science and Technology Fair.

Congratulations to Louise Lubos, Neeraja Narayan and Devi Priya, who received a Participation Award for their projects.

Kavahna Bellman and Indie Burgess were awarded a Commendation for their project, “Are Homemade Dog Treats Better Than Store-Bought?” Their project explored whether homemade dog treats could be a better option for our furry friends.

Aaliyah De Groot and Grace Sutherland received a Bronze Award for their project, “Batter Lab”, which investigated how the amount of baking powder affects cake height.

Marinel Bulanhagui was also awarded a Bronze Award, as well as the Soroptimists’ Innovative Award for Girls in Science, for her project, “Which One Should You Trust: CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) or Blood Finger Prick?” Her project investigated the reliability of two common tools used by people with diabetes to monitor blood glucose levels.

We were also delighted to have Daniel Willoughby, Sam Boutherway and Jesse Rea from our Ruru Satellite School join us at the fair. They received a Bronze Award and the NZAS Special Effort Award for their project, “Which Liquid Melts Ice the Fastest?”

A huge congratulations to all of our students who took part. It was fantastic to see their curiosity, creativity, hard work and enthusiasm for science on display. We are incredibly proud of everyone who represented Verdon College and contributed to such a successful science fair!
