On Track Learning

On Track Learning We help students from preschool to Y13, and adult students with catch up, consolidation, extension, Irlen Syndrome and Dyslexia screening and treatment.

When we enrol our children at school - aged 5, each of us has that expectation and hope that at Y11 our children will pass their first major exam. Sadly many students underachieve for a variety of reasons. At On Track Learning, our goal is to help our students achieve that potential by checking at strategic times that a student is on track. In shaping your child's academic career we then set about

to provide the necessary work for extension or catch up. It is because we are serious about coaching and planning for success that we invite you as parents to be the team manager, to stay in touch with us as your child's coach in the tutoring role. We understand that learning can be a painful experience, but we believe that successful people are people who have failed to the point where they start succeeding! We believe that perseverance is a key and that successful people are people who develop successful habits! We believe that success has an addictive quality where students discover that sense of satisfaction in overcoming their difficulties. Join us in planning for your child's success. Call Patria on 03 214 4181. A History of Success! You may recall times in your life when you attained the next level of success ...maybe you'd just learnt your 4X tables! Successful learners develop a history of success where they look back on past successes and build on the momentum; they feel promoted to the next level, so they look to the future with a sense of optimism believing that they can achieve even more. Success therefore becomes addictive. Sadly where students repeatedly fail they look back on a history of failure, thereby looking to the future pessimistically. This creates a sense of low self esteem, lack of confidence and often creates an addictive cycle of failure. Education not Entertainment

Learning becomes fun when you know the fundamentals... but it still infers there has to be some mental activity. Many students are taught that learning should be fun...they confuse education and entertainment. Obviously we want our students to enjoy their learning, but if we water it down to entertainment we create a work ethic based on fun, which is shallow and doesn't last. The trouble is, NCEA is not fun and if a child simply develops a work ethic based on fun then Exams become a nightmare at high school. We need a work ethic based on perseverance and determination, which are emotional anchors that hold the student through the challenges of learning. Who comes to us? We help students from preschool to Y13 NCEA and adult students. We provide catch up, consolidation and extension work. We have been tutoring since 1993, and have helped several thousand students over that time. We have had the privilege of tutoring head boys, head girls, duxes and top students from all schools in Invercargill. Our Exam Plus classes cater for individual needs where students bring their NCEA requirements to us for additional coaching. What do we provide?
• English
• Spelling
• Writing
• Mathematics
• Essay writing
• Speed reading
• Reading, including preparation for school
• Science subjects
• Testing and treatment for learning disabilities including Irlen Syndrome and Dyslexia
• Learning to learn and Motivation classes
• Parental support

It's because we are serious about what we do that we use trained teachers as tutors. They understand the learning process. Learning Disabilities
Pieces of the puzzle...

We look at breaking the cycle of failure using the following tools:

The first step is a free assessment, identifying the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle is important. An accurate assessment of any learning difficulties and or disabilities is crucial. We are a certified Irlen Screening Centre for reading and perceptual problems, and a Cellfield Centre for reading disabilities including dyslexia. Additionally some students may have some biochemical concerns and we refer on to other health professionals for nutritional support. We also work closely with optometrists, Additionally, some children may have speech and auditory processing difficulties. Layers of problems may require layers of solutions...

It's Term Three Straight Ahead! By now, NCEA students will have had an insight into what their school year entails. With their mix of internal and external assessments, students have a lot to accomplish. Some will already be sitting internal assessments, so now is the time to ask if they are on track to achieving the results they want to achieve.

Whether students want to pass their assessments or excel in them, now is a great time to get in touch with On Track Learning to ensure students are on the right path. An individualized learning plan for each student targets the areas they need to focus on so that they can be confident in their approach to schoolwork.

The school year is passing by quickly, so don't delay. Don't let your student struggle unnecessarily. The sooner students can catch up, keep up and get ahead, the better for their overall end-of-year results, and the happier and more confident they will be in themselves.

One piece of advice I could offer to parents of Year 11-13 students would be to listen to your children. At the merest hint of unhappiness in a subject, get them in to On Track Learning. We support English, Mathematics, or Senior Science subjects. Don’t wait for them “to see how it goes closer to the end of the year”. By then it is too late to “CATCH UP, KEEP UP, GET AHEAD”. Get them here yesterday!
Spaces are limited because classes only contain two students, unless you wish for one-to-one tuition, which limits space further. If students wait to summarise and understand everything just before exams, too much learning needs to happen, not just revision of what they should already know. Don’t take their word for it – act now! If they develop a good understanding now, this will help with their understanding of topics later in the year and they need not enrol for end of year tuition – already too late for us to perform miracles!
You – parent/manager act as an equal member of the team to boost your child’s education. Let our Senior teachers support your Senior students.
Visit www.ontracklearning.co.nz and get them progressing now.

For the last thirty years or so, On Track Learning has assisted thousands of students of all ages and stages. Our free assessments find a starting point for tuition using our motto – “CATCH UP, KEEP UP, GET AHEAD”. Students overall levels of happiness and self-confidence grow and this in turn leads to happier schools and communities. We operate very low ratio classes of three Junior students per teacher (two students per teacher at Senior level Y11 plus). which combines personalised tuition with the security the student feels among other classmates, individualised lesson plans, students are all studying different subjects and levels, so no competition is occurring which minimises any stress, and all lessons are planned so that the student achieves at about 80% success in order to build a habit of success, and so becomes less accepting of failure. Six months tuition generally accounts for one years achievement progress, and this progress “sticks” because we have plugged gaps in learning that schools frequently do not have time to do. Students who have caught up have also learned valuable study and organisational skills to improve their marks which stand them in good stead for years of education into the future. Visit

Parents: build their future with ON TRACK LEARNING.
“On Children”, Kahlil Gibran’s poem and “Teach Your Children Well”, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s song, honour the relationship and responsibility of generations to each other, society and the future. Check them on YouTube.
As a society, we need to ensure that the next generation is better educated than us. Otherwise we risk increasing divisions rather than creating opportunities for all. We can all speak and listen from the level education platform.
ON TRACK LEARNING values the relationship between child, parent/caregiver and teacher as being a metaphorical three legged stool which achieves balance, stability and security. The child is encouraged that you as a parent(manager) believe in and honour their education journey financially and by supporting weekly attendance and homework efforts.
The combination of student/player efforts, parent/manager support and qualified teacher/coach experience, on average, produces twelve months’ progress with six months’ tuition. ON TRACK LEARNING’s one-to-three ratio small class teaching supports the child by plugging knowledge gaps, without overwhelming the student, to produce consistent quality results.
Successful children make for happy homes and schools.

Get sorted!
Planning for Success is our motto at On Track Learning. We look towards long term goals with small step successes.
If you have a feeling that this new year/class/school/term has not advanced your child’s learning as you’d hoped, it’s time to stop hoping and start doing something to address the gaps.
Often a sign of not coping with schoolwork is general unhappiness about school. If this is what you suspect, bring your child in for a free assessment to see where they are at compared with their age and stage at school.
We find at OTL that weekly tuition for 2 terms generally catches the student up by 1 year – value added accelerated learning. Students soon notice their own improvements at school and grow in self-confidence and happiness.
Look me up on www.ontrackleaning.co.nz or phone 214 4181 and get them assessed now, not later. Spaces are limited for next term so filling gaps now will ensure you don’t miss out AND if you get your child in now they are less anxious over the holidays.
Get that assessment done now, and then you know, instead of just wondering!

ON TRACK LEARNING – PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
“Always plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.” – Richard Cushing
Don’t let Term 4 be the wind down for your child’s learning. This is often the term for assessments to measure progress and the chance to continue learning gets moved to a back seat. Now would be a valuable chance for your child to continue to “catch up, keep up and get ahead” to prepare them to face next year’s challenges of new class, new teacher, new school and new learning.

Term 2 starts on Monday April 29th… not that far away really. If you have been thinking that your child may need some extra support, time’s ticking and it’s better to get that support now than to let the learning gaps widen and take even longer to catch up on.
Visit www.ontracklearning.co.nz , look around, fill out the Book Assessment (it’s free) page and I will get back in touch with you – I’m usually pretty prompt. The assessment takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and of course we like the parent/caregiver to be there and see what it’s all about.
If there’s a worry…get it sorted. Cheers Patria

Relay for Life
On Saturday April 13th from 10am-10pm at Stadium Southland, there will be an On Track Learning stand at Relay For Life. It is indoors this year so at least it’s weather proof. You are welcome to drop in, “sit a spell”, walk around the track with or without the On Track Learning Flag and just generally take in the atmosphere. For a gold coin donation (or not) you can contribute to On Track Learning’s effort for the Relay For Life. Those who drop on by (and do a lap with the flag?) can go in the draw for a term’s free assessment by filling out the entry form and posting it in the big red box.
See you there.
