One morning during our safety check at kindy, we noticed something wasn’t quite right… rubbish scattered around our environment. It sparked an important kōrero at whāriki time about what it means to be caring kaitiaki of Papatūānuku.
Together, we made a collective decision to take action, and off we went on a rubbish hunt! With purpose and excitement, our tamariki searched high and low, finding rubbish under the harakeke, tucked in bushes, and hidden beneath play equipment. As each piece was collected, there was a real sense of pride, teamwork, and care. This wasn’t just cleaning up, it was making a difference.
Afterwards, we gathered again to reflect. One of our tamariki, Sage, shared a thoughtful idea to create signs reminding others to use the bin. The idea of drawing a red bin with a clear “stop and use the bin” message inspired us all. What a beautiful example of thinking beyond ourselves and showing care for everyone in our shared space, Ngā Hapori Toitū in action.
We spent time creating posters, drawing, colouring, and bringing our message to life. At Bluff Kindy, we say “whakahokia ki tō ipupara” put it in the bin, and this became the heart of our signs. This hands-on, meaningful mahi reflects Ako mō te Toitūtanga, where learning connects directly to real-life action.
Placing our posters around the kindy, there was a strong sense of pride and belonging. Together, we are creating a cleaner, safer environment for all. This kaupapa also reflects Te Ao Māori, honouring kaitiakitanga, caring for and protecting our natural world.
At our kindergarten, we see every day that small actions can create big change. By working together, sharing ideas, and caring for Papatūānuku, our tamariki are growing as thoughtful, responsible kaitiaki of their world.
