Just a friendly reminder that I rebranded The Tutor Room to The Tutor Co. when we transitioned from in person to online tuition in 2022 :-)

We take care of students from Year 7 though to Year 13 in maths, specialising in bridging gaps, preparing for the NCEA Co-Requisite exam that is commonly assessed in year 10 (I have a blog post on our website explaining more) and NCEA levels 1,2 & 3.

As everyone with teens who sat their Numeracy Co-requisite exams last term will know, results are out!

Unlike NCEA Level 1,2 & 3 exams, you can only receive "Achieved" or "Not Achieved" in the Co-Requisites.

I have been over the moon hearing about the achievement of our students in these exams!

The email in the screenshot is from a parent of one of my students who passed the Term 3 exam after teaming up together in term 2.

This student had not been presented with the most positive learning experiences for maths over the years so their confidence was low and was feeling a bit defeated. Needless to say they is feeling much better now, their confidence has grown and they are ready to tackle NCEA Level 1 next year!

The NCEA Co-requisite exams are new mandatory assessments that students must pass in order to be awarded any level of NCEA. These assessments focus on literacy and numeracy skills, testing students' ability to apply these skills across various contexts.

If your child is heading into year 10 in 2025 and you would like them to have some extra support that is personalised and strategic, reach out by emailing [email protected] and we can create a Learning Roadmap.

This is also a call out to those heading into year 9! Getting in early so we can bridge foundational gaps from Intermediate and then prepare for the Co-requisite early is key!

The NCEA Co-Requisite exams are assessed online, so getting ready for these online exams with The Tutor Co Online is an invaluable bonus!

I hope you are all having a great week!

Another week of getting things ready for a big 2024!

We are excited to see our students from Wednesday 7th of Feb!
We have 4 new tutors joining our team this term which is exciting!

Now that we have had a full year using our amazing online tutoring platform, this is the year that we will be offering small group lessons!

There are 3 classes in the pipeline

Class 1: Year 8 Math Classes with me (Melissa) to build solid foundations for Year 9
This class will be ideal for any student working at year 8 level. First class will be on Tuesday 5th March - Max of 6 students
Core focusses with adapted learning tasks for each individual - I will do a separate post about the mechanics because I think online lessons are highly underrated and underestimated - Technology is great in this way!

Class 2: Art with Ellie! There will be trial classes in Term one to begin with. This first round is for students aged 8 - 13yrs and Ellie will teach them different art techniques will completing one piece of artwork per lesson. - Max of 6 students.

Class 3: NCEA Level 1 Maths with Samantha. These classes will start in Term two - Max of 8 students

Follow our page to keep up to date as I will release more and more details about how the classes are structured, benefits of group lessons (there is more research now!), enrollments etc.

We have had an amazing first year as we transitioned to online learning!

We have made it to December! A full academic year has almost passed without any unwanted disruptions, unlike the past two years!

It has been our first year providing our tutoring sessions online after 6 years in person! IT HAS BEEN AMAZING!!!

There has been a bit of misconception about online tutoring as it was compared to what students experienced through school during lockdown - DEFINITELY NOT THE SAME!

Our tutors & students still have amazing rapport as they did when they were in person, they are still improving as they did when they were in person and it has been AMAZING reading through all of the session notes that get sent to parents!

We have a wonderful small team, wonderful students & families, and a wonderful service that we get to provide!

We also have a couple of new - actually, two new online services launching in 2023 and one product we are reviving for 2023, so definitely watch this space over the coming weeks!!

Ummm....... Can anyone tell me where the time has gone?? Tomorrow we head into the last week of term two, the final push before the kids can enjoy a well-deserved break!

As you all know, we have rebranded as we reach our 6-month mark for transitioning to online learning!
I have decided that our new name, The Tutor Co. deserves a new page (also influenced by some technical difficulties haha!)

Welcome to The Tutor Co.

I am Melissa - the founder and company director of The Tutor Co. (Formerly The Tutor Room.)
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Teaching (Primary), Diploma in Sport and Recreation, and I am trained in the Sounds-Write structured literacy program.

The Tutor Room was established in May 2016 and we now continue to support students in our virtual tutoring sessions as The Tutor Co.

I am supported by a small team of amazing tutors;
Amy, Eliza, Danni, Janelle, Dani.K, Sophia and Zoe.

Together we offer support through tutoring to children of all ages in Math and English through online tutoring.

The Tutor Room was built as an in-person, one on one tutoring service which focussed on pen to paper, and hands-on learning, which we became known for in our community. As a result of the pandemic, our tutoring lessons are still one on one, 45 minutes, but sessions are now carried out virtually on Zoom. We use technology to connect with our students but all sessions are still teacher-planned and directed, student-centered and pen to paper or we utilise Zoom's interactive whiteboard. The essence and philosophy that The Tutor Room was built on, still stands strong in our new delivery.

We have a genuine passion for children and helping them, not only with building skills and knowledge in their target learning area, but helping them to understand their learning style, encouraging them to be themselves and being comfortable to ask questions, ask for help and being comfortable making mistakes or “not knowing something”, one of the key growth mindset words is “yet” you haven’t mastered that “yet”.

In my experience and Journey with The Tutor Room, tutoring is more than just learning the skills - It’s the connection, the rapport, the support and the cheerleading that will also contribute to helping your child thrive.

Writing is much more than just putting pen to paper. It is a dynamic part of our language, inseparable from literacy. Forming letters manually helps children to connect those letters with our alphabet and associate shape with sound. With language being a common vessel of knowledge dissemination, it is no wonder writing plays a crucial role in learning.
