We have been having a great time with our art this month, exploring lots of different mediums, techniques and art forms. Tamariki have enjoyed this topic and showed some awesome creativity and perseverance to create their mahi toi (art work).

Over the month of July, our Montessori learning focus has been Science and Technology, and we have been enjoying some fantastic hands-on learning experiences.

Tamariki have been having science experiments with balloons, making rain using shaving foam and dye colouring, observing chemical reactions with Mentos and Coke, conducting the rubber egg experiment, investigating how mould grows on bread in different environments, exploring germs by comparing bacteria growth on agar plates after washed and unwashed hands touched them, and testing which objects sink or float.

For our technology learning, we have been exploring both old and modern technology. We have discussed which items require batteries or electricity to work and have enjoyed experimenting with a variety of technologies, including battery-powered microphones, torches, cameras, remote-control cars, and more.

We have had so many feijoas for tamariki to harvest for our Kai time this month! Yum!
It is always exciting for tamariki to find our fruit treasures under the trees each morning.

This month we have been focusing on the topic of ‘Geography’, tamariki have been having fun learning about where we live in Hokitika, the continents, Aotearoa (New Zealand), the West Coast and studying different landforms. It’s lovely to watch their knowledge grow. Ka whāngai, ka tupu, ka puāwai- That which is nurtured, blossoms and grows.
