🌟 Cultural Festival 2026 – What a Performance! 🌟

Our kapa haka absolutely “smashed it” at Friday’s Cultural Festival!

What an incredible collective effort from our performers, whānau, supporters and wider school community.

To our amazing performers: your stage presence, confidence and energy were outstanding. It was fantastic to hear the comments about how, for such a small group, you were “loud and proud!” ❤️

Congratulations to every single one of you. You have worked incredibly hard over the past few weeks, and all of that mahi, commitment and dedication was clearly visible on stage. Your efforts have been noticed, appreciated and celebrated. 🙌

A huge thank you to our whānau, staff and supporters for the encouragement, time and energy you have given along the way. From rehearsals and preparation to cheering from the audience, every contribution helped make this performance possible.

Well done team, you should all be incredibly proud of yourselves!

Here is a quick few photos from Stacey and Bree. More to come on Monday. 😀

🌟 Tū Ake Tū Kaha! 🌟
❤️Loud. Proud. Amazing. ❤️

He’s a joke in himself- and for one night only the Hikuai School van will be operating as a courtesy wagon with questionable tunes.

Service operating tomorrow night.

🌱 TREES FOR SURVIVAL | PLANTING DAY 2026 🌱

What an awesome day of learning, mahi and getting our hands dirty!

Today our Te Awa and Te Maunga students travelled to the property of Jeff and Jaimee Price in Ōpoutere for our 2026 Trees for Survival Planting Day.

This was a pretty special moment for our students. The native seedlings they planted and cared for in our school growing unit last year were finally ready to head out into the whenua. 🌿

Armed with spades, gloves and plenty of enthusiasm, our crew helped plant more than 700 native plants into a newly developed wetland area on the Price property, including harakeke, mānuka, kānuka, māhoe, tī kōuka and native toetoe.

It was fantastic to see our tamariki working together, getting muddy and playing a very real part in restoring and protecting our local environment. These plants will continue to grow long after our students have moved on from Hikuai School - a pretty cool legacy to leave behind. 💚

A massive thank you to Jeff and Jaimee of Jennian Homes Hauraki Coromandel for welcoming us onto their property and giving our students the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful project.

We also want to give a very special acknowledgement to Jayne Nightingale, our wonderful Trees for Survival coordinator. Jayne has worked alongside Hikuai School since we first became involved with Trees for Survival back in 2019, helping generations of our students grow, nurture and eventually plant native trees within our community.

Today marked Jayne's final planting day with us, as she has now retired from her role to spend more time with her family and develop her own native plant nursery. We are incredibly grateful for the knowledge, enthusiasm and support Jayne has shared with our school over the past seven years. 🌱💚

Thank you, Jayne - you've helped our tamariki plant far more than just trees.

Days like this are what learning is all about. 🌿🌏

Small hands. Big mahi. A greener future.

Rain, Mud and Smiles at Hikuai School Cross Country

A little torrential rain, plenty of mud and a healthy dose of wind weren’t enough to dampen the spirits at the annual Hikuai School Cross Country, held recently on Tom and Chalmas MacKenzie’s farm on Kitahi Road.

The weather certainly threw everything it had at our young runners, with heavy rain falling for the majority of the event and turning an already challenging farm course into a true cross-country test. But if there was ever an opportunity for our Hikuai kids to show their resilience, this was it!

Running in their classroom groups, the children tackled the wet and muddy course with determination, giving it their absolute best from start to finish. Despite the conditions, there were smiles everywhere, with the mud, rain and wind only seeming to add to the adventure.

As always, it was fantastic to have such wonderful support from our parents and whānau, who braved the conditions to cheer on our runners and help make the day such a success.

There was also a well-earned reward waiting at the finish line, with the children treated to some delicious home baking provided by one of our amazing parent helpers, Kylie Fraser. After battling their way around the course, it certainly went down a treat!

A huge thank you goes to Tom and Chalmas MacKenzie for once again allowing us to use their beautiful farm and to everyone who helped make the event possible.

The conditions may not have been kind, but they provided the perfect opportunity for our students to demonstrate the determination, positivity and resilience that make us so proud of them.

Mud, rain and wind couldn’t wipe the smiles off the faces of our Hikuai kids — and that probably tells the story of the day better than anything!
