Hawera Playcentre An early childhood education centre run co-operatively by parents and caregivers. We are situated at 89 Fairfield Road, Hawera next to Ramanui school.

Hawera Playcentre is a parent led Early Childhood Education service for children aged 0-6years. Hawera Playcentre is part of the New Zealand Playcentre Federation. Playcentre is a family organisation where:

Today the tamariki followed their interests straight to the sandpit… and once the hose came out, there was no stopping them!

With a little bit of sunshine, they were right back into one of their favourite natural environments- getting wet, muddy, splashing, laughing and having an absolute ball!

And amongst all that splashing and chaos, we saw so much learning happening naturally. Turn taking, sharing resources, negotiating, problem solving, communicating and of course the best part…. being silly together!

Was there a LOT of washing to do afterwards for the parents Absolutely. 😂
Was it worth it? 100%!

Our tamariki have been busy becoming little chefs, learning the process of cooking from start to finish. This term we’ve made delicious scones, decorated biscuits and made pizzas and next week we’ll be whipping up a yummy hedgehog slice!

Cooking is about so much more than food. It’s a wonderful way to build early maths skills through measuring and counting, develop language by following instructions, strengthen fine motor skills through mixing and pouring, and encourage turn taking, patience, and confidence as we create together. And best of all, food has a special way of bringing people together 😍

We can’t wait to see what our little chef make next! 🧑‍🍳

Puanga/Matariki 2026 at Hāwera Playcentre 🌟

An evening of kōrero, our tamariki performing and shared reflection as we marked the beginning of the Māori New Year.

Our evening began with crafts, sports games and shared kai before we headed outside to sit under the stars and roast marshmallows together. What an amazing evening we shared with our Playcentre whānau!

We wish you all a safe and happy Matariki long weekend. How are you and your whānau spending it?

On Friday, we explored South Taranaki LibraryPlus!
Our tamariki loved the special session put on for our Playcentre! A morning with lots of sensory play, singing and plenty of beautiful pukapuka to enjoy together!

A big thank you to Te Ramanui o Ruaputahanga for such a fun morning. We’re so lucky to have such an amazing space in our community!

These tamariki are in full “long weekend mode” 🕺 💃 Just a reminder that we’ll be closed tomorrow (Monday) for King’s Birthday! Have a majestic Monday filled with fun, whānau and maybe even a little dancing of your own 😉
