We tend to talk about courage as the ability to say YES.

Yes to the opportunity.
Yes to the challenge.
Yes to trying something new.
Yes to stepping outside your comfort zone.
Yes to something you’d never have agreed to before (like a bungy jump)

But, you know what has required a fair bit of courage in my life? Saying NO.

No when something wasn’t right for me.
No when I didn’t have the capacity.
No when saying yes would have been easier than disappointing somebody.
No when every people-pleasing instinct was telling me to just go along with it. 😬

Courage isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s knowing when not to, and that little two-letter word can take a surprising amount of practice. 💛

Here’s a question I’ve been sitting with lately - What would you choose if fear wasn’t making the decision for you?

Not if you suddenly became fearless. Not if you knew everything would work out perfectly. Just… what would you choose? Because I’m not convinced courageous people feel less fear than everybody else. I think courage is something we practise.

We make the phone call.
Send the email.
Walk through the door.
Say the thing.
Give something a go before we feel completely ready.

And quite often, the courage arrives after we’ve started. 💪

What’s one small thing you could stop letting fear decide for you?

You can have an entire team cheering you on and still be the one who has to take the first step.

People have called me courageous for learning to walk again (twice, might I add!), travelling independently, driving, going to the gym, standing on a stage and simply getting on with life after losing my limbs.

Some of those things feel completely normal to me now, but these photos? They remind me of moments when courage really was required.

From learning to stand on prosthetic legs for the first time, wondering whether they would actually hold me to walking with and then without the forearm support frame, to then learning to drive with hand controls, hoping that I would be safe on the road and then embarking on my first solo trip out of town.

You see, I wasn’t alone in those moments, far from it. I had incredible people beside me, behind me and cheering me on. They gave me confidence, encouragement, expertise and sometimes the push I needed.

But here’s the thing about support…someone can hold your hand (or arm in my case 😜), but they can’t take the step for you.

This is true whether you’re learning to walk again, making a scary decision, asking for help, starting something new or finally doing the thing you’ve been avoiding.

Having people in your corner doesn’t make you any less courageous, sometimes they’re the reason you find enough courage to begin with.

So surround yourself with people who’ll cheer loudly, steady you when you wobble and remind you what you’re capable of and then, when you’re ready, take the step.

Apparently I’m at my most inspirational somewhere between the fruit and veg aisle and the checkout. 😂

Every now and then someone will stop me while I’m doing my groceries and tell me how courageous I am, and while I genuinely appreciate the kindness behind it, there’s usually a little voice inside my head going:

“COURAGE? I’M BUYING BLOODY BROCCOLI!” 🥦😂

Because to me, I’m not being brave. I’m just doing my groceries.

It has, however, made me realise how differently we see courage from the outside as something that looks extraordinary to one person can simply be everyday life to someone else, and sometimes the things that actually require the most courage are the things nobody sees at all. 💛

What a privilege it was to attend An Afternoon with Dame Sophie Pascoe PLY yesterday 🥇🏊🏼‍♀️

Sophie shared so openly about her journey, the highs, the challenges, life beyond competitive swimming and what she’s learned along the way.

As a fellow amputee, there’s something pretty special about seeing someone who has represented New Zealand on the world stage speak so honestly about resilience, mental health, identity and embracing what comes next.

An inspiring afternoon with plenty of laughs, perspective and a few great reminders that our differences never have to define our possibilities.

Thank you, Sophie, for continuing to inspire both in and out of the pool. 🇳🇿💛

Thank you Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce and Westpac NZ for putting on such a fantastic event.

Ps that gold medal is heavier than it looks 🥇🦾

Shout out to the Christchurch Limb Service Peke Waihanga | Make, Create, Innovate for Limbs for my new arm socket 🦾 isn’t she pretty 😍

After having my last socket for almost 10 years, it’s a bit of an adjustment but I’m sure I’ll get there soon enough.

Huge thanks to Travis (clinician), Craig (technician) and the entire limb service team, I know it’s been complex but it is appreciated🌟

A keynote might only last an hour, but what people don’t see is the energy spent before I ever step onto the stage.

Showering. Getting dressed. Doing my makeup. Packing everything I need. Driving or flying. Navigating airports and crowds. Walking, standing, networking and simply existing in a body that has to work considerably harder.

Research shows that people with lower limb amputations can use significantly more energy when walking than someone without limb loss.

For me, being bilateral below knee, it’s roughly 80% more before we even factor in my upper limb loss.

So when someone says, “I don’t know how you do it,” the honest answer is sometimes neither do I. 😂

I love what I do, but there are days when I walk through my front door with absolutely nothing left in the tank.

The visible part of someone’s day rarely tells the whole story.

Be kind. You never know what their body, heart or mind has already carried. 💛

I used to think rest was something I had to earn.

Finish the work.
Help everyone else.
Tick every box.
Then, maybe, I could stop.

These days, I’m learning that recovery isn’t a reward for pushing myself to the point of exhaustion, it’s part of the process.

Resting before you’re completely empty isn’t lazy and saying no when your energy is already committed isn’t selfish.

Sometimes protecting your energy is the most responsible thing you can do, especially when you want to keep giving your best to the people and things that matter most.

Does anyone else find it much easier to tell other people to rest than to take their own advice? 🙋‍♀️

Everyone talks a lot about time management at work but you can have the world’s most beautifully colour-coded calendar and still be completely running on empty.

People don’t leave their energy budget at the office door.

They may be caring for ageing parents, raising children, navigating health issues, recovering from loss or carrying responsibilities their colleagues know nothing about.

Good leadership isn’t about removing every challenge or expecting less from people, it’s about creating an environment where people can do meaningful work without constantly draining themselves to prove their commitment.

Sometimes the most useful question isn’t: “How can we fit more in?”

It’s: “What is this costing our people?”

This is something I explore in my keynote presentations, resilience workshops and mentoring because protecting energy isn’t just personal, it shapes how we work, lead and live.

How energy-aware is your workplace?

Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking at the Fire and Emergency NZ Hawke’s Bay District Leaders Hui at East Pier 🤗

When I looked around that room, I saw leaders, firefighters and volunteers. People who are there on someone’s worst day. People who quietly put others first, often without recognition or applause.

My message wasn’t just about resilience. It was about people.

In a world that’s moving faster than ever, where technology continues to change the way we live and work, our greatest strength has never been artificial intelligence, better systems or the latest equipment.

It’s us. It’s our ability to connect, to listen, to encourage, to show up and to lead with courage and compassion.

I also reminded them that the essential ingredient has never been the strategy, the resources or the circumstances, it’s always been THEM.

I finished with this message…

“Every call you attend, every conversation you have, every person you encourage, every hand you hold, every example you set becomes part of someone else’s story.

So leave here today knowing this: your greatest impact won’t be measured by the fires you fought, the emergencies you attended, or the titles you hold. It will be measured by the lives you changed simply because you chose to show up.

You may wear the uniform but your greatest strength has never been what’s on your back, it’s what’s in your heart.” ❤️

Thank you to Fire and Emergency New Zealand Hawke’s Bay for trusting me to close your Leaders Hui. It was an absolute honour to spend time with such an incredible group of people who make our communities safer every single day and thank you for the bucket of emergency goodies too including the choccies and w**e, definite staples for the first aid kit 😉
