Sometimes we get a chance to celebrate some of our more ‘behind the scenes’ people, those who truly help make Hereworth tick. And today is a fantastic reason to direct a little fanfare Nicola Pentelow’s way.

Because Nicola just flew to Brisbane and last night won the rather prestigious ‘Best School Admissions Campaign’ at the Education+ Brisbane conference… with over 300+ applications and 700+ in attendance! An unbelievable result, against some absolute powerhouse schools from across New Zealand and Australia.

It’s so, so deserved. If you’ve been through Hereworth, you’ll have no doubt met our Director of Enrolments throughout the journey, and this award is a testament to Nicola’s work ethic and desire to make things as engaging, simple and complete as possible for our parents. Well done Nicola, we’re pleased as punch back here in NZ.

We’ve had students zooming all over the country for prep fixtures and the like recently, so it was time we had a visiting choir join us on home turf. For the students of Hadlow Preparatory School, it was their first time visiting Hereworth overnight, and they joined our Choir for a variety of singing workshops before both choirs performed live to a packed ASPAC.

It’s great to see performing arts students get the opportunity to mix, mingle, and learn from each other. But it's a special shoutout to our billeting parents, who provided the first-ever billeting experience for many of these Hadlow students. It’s no small thing to stay away from school at this age, so a huge thanks to our families who showed these kids some Hawke’s Bay hospitality.

Our Year 3s took one small step for mankind recently as their space module culminated with some absolutely incredible spacesuits on the final day. Not sure if NASA is providing the schematics these days, but it’s clear the parents have seen some incredible skills on the sewing machine.

Once the learning was done, we blasted them into space where clearly they met Yoda, fought the Dark Side, and cruised at lightspeed around the galaxy in their suits of the future. Marvellous stuff. A huge well done to Mrs Smith and her parents for stoking the embers of our students’ imaginations.

Our Father’s Day Family BBQ is next Friday 4 September, and it’s a great excuse to hang out with your child on school grounds, surrounded by other dads and caregivers while enjoying a cold drink or two. This year, we’re also welcoming all members of the Hereworth community to come along and make this a family occasion.

⭐️Our Sandy Lane cross country is earlier that afternoon, so you can join us for one of the essential sporting events in the school calendar, before enjoying the BBQ by the rugby pavilion with other parents/caregivers.
⭐️We’ll also have our Sports Gear Drive set up by the pavilion, with second-hand sports gear available for just $5.

Ask any former student what the hardest-fought fixture of the year is, and there’s one name that's always on the list – Huntley School. Our fondest foes have given us some cracking games over the years, and last week’s two-day prep fixture would turn out some outstanding performances.

On home turf, our teams played exceedingly well, grabbing an absolute thriller in the Rugby 1st XV, alongside solid wins in both 1st and 2nd Netball. Hereworth then played an entertaining brand of football to win well against the Huntley 1st XI before facing two tough hockey squads and being defeated in both games.

On the road the following day, our primary teams represented the H beautifully, both on the pitch with their skills, and off the turf with their manners and character. Hereworth notched victory in the rugby and hockey, before being defeated in the netball and then finishing with a win in the football.

Epic stuff. Coming away with a fistful of wins against our longest adversary is fun to be sure, but it’s always about more than the W. Seeing boys and girls from both schools playing hard but fair, and always ending with a handshake is everything we hope for. Great job to both schools, and thanks to our friends at Huntley for giving us the perfect experience before the midterm break. Till next we meet.

What. A. Game. Yesterday’s 1st XV clash against a ferocious Huntley squad was an absolute blinder, with Hereworth winning it with the final play of the game. From the scenes in this photo, you can see what it meant to our team, as they retained the Murray Blandford Shield between Lower North Island Independent Primary Schools. (We’ll have full Huntley fixture pics from all sports up soon.)

Love it. The team also had some HB Magpie players join them in the afternoon, with Harry Godfrey, Connor McLeod and Frank Lochore (Captain & Hereworth Old Boy) taking the time to talk the game. What a way to finish the season. Huge thanks to the Magpies players for taking the time to meet our players, and good luck for tonight's clash.

- AN UPDATE FOR 2027 –

Exciting times at Hereworth, as our current roll of 333(!) students is tied for the largest in our 100 year history, as we approach our Centenary. With interviews & placements still underway, we will be at capacity across many of our year groups for 2027.

However, there are still some years with places available.

2027 Year 7 – Limited spaces
2027 Year 6 – Limited spaces
2027 Year 5 – Limited spaces

The opportunities available in these years are incredible, ensuring each child is set up for High School by the time they walk through the gates for the last time.

- Just because we’re full at some year groups doesn’t mean the story is over. Throughout 2027 and beyond, spaces may become available as circumstances change. Dance is now hugely popular at Hereworth with both our boys and girls, and the recent DanceNZ Event was a chance for them to show their stuff. And boy did they, with over 60 of our students hitting the stage in groups or running solos/duos.

As you can see from the photos, our squads did brilliantly, landing certificates left and right in multiple categories. Of special note was the ubiquitous Olive Maloney, who in between coaching our Year 6s to victory, also won a coveted ‘Golden Ticket’, one of only two awarded at the event.

Just, magic. Massive congrats to all of our boys and girls for hitting the stage and representing the H so, so well. We’re justifiably proud of you all.

Maths can be all kinds of fun with the right teachers, the right questions and a little competition thrown in the mix. That’s what greeted our students in ‘Maths Week’ recently - 5 days of problem solving and challenges to solve. All of our Year Groups got involved each lunchtime, with a series of bamboozling questions that gave our boys and girls some really fun activities that also built their brains.

We especially love that some of our parents got involved (we’re happy to send you extra homework, any time 😀). We’re firm believers that schools should be fun, engaging and something to look forward to, and fun maths provided exactly that.

A visit from our good friends at Wellesley College is always a season highlight, and yesterday’s clash had everything from your childhood winter memories – rain-swept pitches, muddy faces, and superkeen students ready to give it all. We had more than a smattering of parents and supporters on the sidelines, loving the action on the pitch while probably regretting their laundry requirements ahead of the weekend.

When the day wrapped, Hereworth had claimed victories in the 1st XV rugby and 1st VII Hockey, while Wellesley won the 1st XI football, alongside a hard-fought draw in the 2nd XI football.

Great stuff. Shout out to our coaches, staff and parents for putting in the work to ensure these days remain unforgettable. Thanks for making the journey north, Wellesley, we’ll see you soon.
