I'm incredibly proud of my son, who recently joined the Havelock North Toastmasters Club as part of his Duke of Edinburgh skill development. This week was particularly exciting as I attended to support him. My son, the youngest member of the group and a first-time speech evaluator, was awarded "Best Evaluator" of the meeting, while I was honoured to receive the "Best Table Topics" speech award as a guest. Table Topics are impromptu speeches that help improve quick thinking and speaking skills. A big congratulations also to Olivia McGregor for her Top Speech award for her outstanding and moving speech on port-wine birthmarks and their treatment.

For those unfamiliar with Toastmasters, it’s a fantastic organisation that helps individuals build confidence, improve public speaking, and develop leadership skills in a supportive and friendly environment. Whether you're looking to enhance your career, improve communication, or simply want to meet like-minded people, Toastmasters offers a great opportunity.

If you're interested in joining, the Havelock North Toastmasters Club is accepting new members and meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 pm at St Columba's Church foyer, 14 Napier Road, Havelock North. You can reach out to them at 0273308129 or visit https://www.toastmasters.org/Find-a-Club/00004975-havelock-north-club for more information.

The absolute highlight of our 21st Celebration last week - Our new Toastmaster of the Year trophy will be named the Jeannie Wright Trophy, in honour of one of our foundation members who's still going strong. Here's the full citation:
Jeannie Wright is our longest-serving toastmaster. As a founding member of Havelock North Toastmasters, she has been involved in every aspect of running the club and is a frequent source of knowledge when the rest of us have questions. She currently serves as VP Membership and Sergeant at Arms, and is also a very active member of Hastings Toastmasters.
Jeannie is now retired but in her working life she was a librarian working for the National Library of New Zealand, a role that has benefitted from being a member of toastmasters as she gained many skills that she was able to incorporate into her career and helped her to gain promotions and recognition within the organisation.
Outside of Toastmasters Jeannie has a very busy calendar enjoying several activities from Scottish Highland Dancing to genealogy. She is also a keen traveller and has had many adventures around the globe that are often the subject of her speeches. Her keenness to travel has not waned over the years and she is always planning her next adventure.
And so, to commemorate her 21 years of dedication and service to Havelock North Toastmasters, it gives me great pleasure to announce that our new Toastmaster of the Year trophy will be named the Jeannie Wright Trophy in Jeannie’s honour.

So cool to have three founding members with us, Jacqui Hartley-Smith, Jeannie Wright and Peter Crofskey.

A bonus speech by Havelock North solicitor Mark von Dadelszen, who credits Havelock North Toastmasters as being very influential in his work in writing "Member's Meetings", a very practical user's guide to those running or participating in meetings. He then wrote "Law of Societies in New Zealand", an invaluable guide to the many New Zealanders actively involved in setting up and running societies and charitable trusts.
