In the Southern Hemisphere, we have recently passed the shortest day of the year. The first fruit buds are beginning to appear, and ever so slowly the earth is awakening once again.

In Waldorf schools, including our own Taikura Rudolf Steiner School here in Hawke's Bay, Aotearoa New Zealand, this midwinter season is honoured through the tradition of the Spiral Walk. Students take part in this ceremony with their classes, and later the staff gather to experience it together as well.

The gesture of winter is one of turning inward. We can witness this all around us as the trees become dormant, many animals hibernate, and the natural world grows quieter and more restful. As human beings, we are also invited into this same rhythm. Whether we consciously choose it or not, we naturally spend more time indoors by the fire, reading, creating, reflecting, or simply resting as the daylight hours shorten.

This inward season can become an important and transformative time for our inner lives. It offers space to process our experiences, reflect, and discover new insights that can be harder to hear amidst the busyness of the warmer months. Then, as the earth begins to awaken, the days lengthen and the warmth slowly returns, we often find ourselves mirroring nature once again. A renewed energy emerges - a desire to connect with others, spend time outdoors, plant seeds in the garden, and begin creating anew.

The Spiral Walk beautifully symbolises this journey of moving inward, finding the light, and returning outward with it.

At Taikura, a spiral is carefully created from beautiful evergreen foliage in a darkened room. At its centre burns a single candle. Each person is given an unlit candle and slowly walks the spiral path towards the centre. There, they light their candle from the central flame before gently making their way back out, placing their candle somewhere along the spiral. One by one, each person repeats this simple act, and gradually the once-dark room begins to glow with hundreds of small lights.

The central flame can be seen as representing the shared light and consciousness that lives within each of us. As we light our own candle from this single source, we acknowledge the inward journey of winter and the light we have cultivated within ourselves. We then carry that light back into the world as the earth itself begins to awaken.

If we have embraced winter as an opportunity for inwardness, this ceremony can feel deeply moving. It may evoke vulnerability, gratitude, joy, hope, or quiet reflection. There is something profoundly human about witnessing the room slowly illuminate, each individual contributing their own small light to something much greater than themselves.

Of course, we all bring our own perspectives and understandings to gestures such as this, and I'm sure each of us walks away with something different. Yet there is another beautiful way to hold this experience. The Spiral Walk reminded me that we are all part of something larger than ourselves. We share the same seasons, many of the same hopes and fears, and the same human journey. To stand together in silence, each carrying our own light while contributing to the collective whole, is a simple yet deeply meaningful reminder that we are one.

Our Supportive Therapies Workshop (starting 31st July!) is for anyone who wants to bring more intention and loving care into everyday life, whether for themselves, their family, or those they support. If you're a nurse, therapist, or caregiver, this workshop can also enrich your professional practice with fresh inspiration and practical therapeutic skills.

Through biography work, casework, inner development, and therapeutic nursing practices, you'll explore ways to deepen your presence, strengthen your practice, and offer truly individualised care.

Whether you're seeking practical tools, personal growth, or a deeper understanding of holistic healing, this workshop offers a meaningful path to enrich both your work and your own inner journey.

As a mother of two, learning how to weave supportive therapies into my own life and the lives of my children has been a true gift. These gentle, practical approaches have transformed the way I think about caring - not as something we simply do, but as a conscious way of being that nurtures health, dignity, and each person's innate capacity for healing.

There are a few spaces left. Register here: [email protected]
