Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2026

E ngā tauira, e ngā whānau o Te Rito Maioha, tēnā koutou katoa.

As we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2026, we encourage everyone to embrace and uplift our beautiful indigenous language. Te reo Māori is a taonga that connects us to our histories, our identities, and one another. Whether you are fluent, beginning your journey, or supporting others to learn, every word spoken contributes to the revitalisation and strength of te reo Māori.

Ko te kaupapa o tēnei wiki he whakanuia te reo Māori i roto i ngā wāhi katoa o tō tātou ao. It is an opportunity for us all to use, hear, learn, and celebrate te reo Māori in our homes, workplaces, learning environments, and communities. Through everyday kōrero, waiata, karakia, and acts of manaakitanga, we continue to nurture the language for future generations.

Kia māia, kia manawanui, kia kaha te kōrero i te reo Māori. Every effort counts, and every voice matters.

Our Heretaunga team have set a wero, focusing on ordering 'kāwhe' as our te reo Māori domain. See our rauemi attached, kia kaha rā!

Nā reira, kia whakanui tātou i te reo rangatira i tēnei wiki, ā, i ngā rā katoa o te tau.

Our local team have facilitated the ENGAGE approach to more than 120 Kaiako across Hawke’s Bay over the last two years. We consistently receive feedback about the effectiveness of the approach in supporting Kaiako and whānau to strengthen self regulation and social competence of tamariki through playing games. Kaiako also share how it has supported team cohesion and intentionality of teaching practice.
We have two more spaces available to train teaching teams early in 2027. Please reach out if your team are interested.

Learning through Play 💙

Across Aotearoa New Zealand, ENGAGE™ is helping preschoolers build self-regulation through games that strengthen their ability to manage their thoughts, feelings and actions.
Self-regulation is one of the most important skills mokopuna develop in the early years. It supports learning, friendships, problem-solving and emotional well-being.

The approach behind ENGAGE™ is grounded in decades of research, with studies showing that strong self-regulation in early childhood is associated with more positive educational, social and well-being outcomes later in life.

Noho is such an important time for us to come together to share Mātauranga, kēmu, pūrākau, and a little line dancing with Naan. Our time together reminds us we are whānau!!
We were also privileged to have Whaea Nui and Matua Doug share their knowledge of Te Whanganui ā Orotu on our hikoi today. Our kete are full.
Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.

We just love neuroscience. This just reinforces the importance of early childhood teachers and parents in shaping the lifelong outcomes of young children.

Neural Nugget: Between 0–3 years old, a child’s brain forms over 1 million neural connections per second. This time in life is the most pivotal, and also the most vulnerable for brain development. Early experiences shape cognitive development in early childhood.

We’ve made the science of baby brain development accessible for all. The Baby Brain Map is your interactive guide to early brain science. Start exploring now and help lay the foundation for healthy growth: https://bit.ly/4w3j4jg
