Linden Singers of Hawkes Bay Inc

Our Musical Director is Jane Pierard. We welcome enquiries from interested singers. The Linden Singers of Hawke’s Bay was formed in 1971 by Basil Brooker who sadly passed away in April 2021

The aim of the choir is to provide an opportunity for people interested in choral music to meet and sing for pleasure and to give enjoyment to those who can be tempted to come and listen from time to time. We aim to achieve the very highest standard of choral singing possible. For some years the size of the choir was deliberately restricted to approximately 20 members but has increased to approximately 30 members drawn from the Hastings, Havelock North and Napier areas. The choir performs a wide variety of sacred and secular music including Madrigals, Motets, Nursery Rhymes, Part Songs, Spirituals, Christmas Carols and some longer works. Originally the choir was known as the Hastings Madrigal Singers but a change of name was considered desirable because, although we sing some madrigals, these only make up a small part of our repertoire. Since its formation in 1971 the choir has given numerous recitals and concerts and was a regular Broadcaster with Radio New Zealand both at local and national level from 1973 until 1997 when Radio New Zealand stopped recording New Zealand choirs. In 1999 and again in 2007 the Choir was recorded by TVNZ for inclusion in their “Praise Be” programmes. In recent years the choir has normally presented two public concerts each year, one in May and the second in November or early December. The Linden Tree has been associated with music over the years and there is a carol entitled "The Linden Tree Carol". The founding conductor's home was called "Linden" with the front of the property for many years being dominated by a huge Linden tree - a natural link between the group's name and it's origins. Since 2021 several other Musical Directors have taken charge of the group, including Stephen Lange and Jane Pierard. Both of these Hawke's Bay musicians are accomplished conductors and composers, and the choir has benefited greatly from their expertise. Jane is currently the Musical Director of Linden Singers and the group is flourishing under her direction.
