It was a perfect day to get out and take a walk to the park. Our older tamariki buddied up and walked hand in hand to our local park where we had the best time on the playground. Lots of laughter and fun was had as the tamariki took turns and worked together to make the most of our park trip.
We love having opportunities to get out, explore our local community, and create meaningful learning experiences through play.

Today we came dressed in our PJs, ready for Pyjama day.

At morning tea, we enjoyed marmite and strawberry jam toast, along with a yummy warm Milo to keep us nice and warm.

Check out our beautiful tamariki and kaiako in their PJs and enjoying their special morning tea!

Today we had something a little different at First Footsteps! We hired Te Waka Tākaro - the Hastings Play Trailer. It was filled with a variety of play based equipment, such as large foam shapes, balls, sports gear and more.
The children had an amazing time exploring the foam shapes and creating all sorts of imaginative structures and designs. It was wonderful to see their creativity come to life through play.
The experience also provided a fantastic opportunity for tamariki to practice important social skills such as respect, turn taking, communication, and working together as a team. What a fun and engaging day of learning through play!

Today we recognised Pink Shirt Day. Tamariki arrived dressed in pink, excited and ready to take part in a range of pink-themed activities.

At group time, we had meaningful conversations about kindness, inclusion, and respect, and what these values look like for our under 5s.

Throughout the day, some children enjoyed having their face painted and nails painted, and everyone had the opportunity to ice a biscuit with pink icing before enjoying their delicious treat.

During our lunchtime group time, we asked the tamariki if they had shown kindness today and invited them to share the kind things they had done. It was so special hearing the thoughtful and caring actions our tamariki had shown throughout the morning, while also recognising their own kindness towards others.

Ka pai tō mahi, friends, and thank you all for taking part and helping us celebrate kindness, inclusion, and respect together.

What a beautiful, warm Autumn morning it has been — the perfect opportunity to take some of our older tamariki to explore our local park, while our younger tamariki enjoyed some Autumn art creations and activities. 🍂

Lots of fun was had by all as they explored with their senses of sound, smell, sight, and touch.

At the park, the tamariki took part in an Autumn treasure hunt, while the tamariki back at the centre decorated rocks using a variety of colours, patterns, and materials.

Today in our Big Steps room we made yummy pizza bread to have for afternoon tea! The tamariki took their time to scoop on spaghetti and spread it over their bread. They sprinkled their ham and cheese on and popped it on the baking tray to cook. Ka pai friends - what a great job you did of your pizzas 🍕

Today we participated in “Hoods up, Volume down” to create awareness and acceptance around our autistic community. We all wore our hoodies and participated in a quiet, low sensory hour from 10am-11am. We turned the lights off and worked hard toward keeping our environment quiet. At group time we discussed autism, showed our friends our core board (a way to communicate with non verbal friends) and we read our big book on autism. At morning tea we put the bouncy balls on the laptop and tried our best to keep them still. The bouncy balls listen out and when it’s too noisy they bounce so you know to quieten down. The tamariki really took this on board and let each other know when they were too loud or the balls were bouncing! Thank you to all our whānau for dressing their children in hoodies today and help us create awareness ☺️❤️

Today we celebrated Anzac Day here at First Footsteps. We read our special Anzac Ted book and watching a video about Anzac for group time. We did some craft to make poppies and also made a special Anzac slice and iced biscuits too. Check out the photos below. We hope you all have a great long weekend and we will see you back on Tuesday ☺️

All of our tamariki had a blast at ‘Wheels Day’ yesterday here at First Footsteps. We took turns going out in groups to the front carpark to zoom around on the big concrete pad. We had a chalk road to follow and they raced each other around. Bikes are always a huge interest here so it was really cool to extend their interest further and allow them to share their special bikes and scooters from home. We can’t believe how speedy and confident they all were ☺️ 🚲 🛴
