Te Tāhuhu o Taikura

Within our School and Kindergartens, we continue to work with Te Tāhuhu o Taikura, the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) programme. Our positive behaviour expectations are aligned to our school values of Kindness, Perseverance and Respect, all underpinned with Gratitude. The elements of reverence, love, and freedom in our vision statement, along with our three-fold picture of the human being and the ideas of thinking, feeling and willing, are the essential elements which we work to embody in our values. When we were implementing this programme we wanted to give it a name appropriate to our context. The image shared was that if Taikura is the ‘whare’ then the tāhuhu or the ridge pole is our values, Te Tāhuhu o Taikura.

Our intention with Te Tāhuhu o Taikura is to nurture an environment where our values of Kindness, Perseverance, Respect and Gratitude can be articulated by all consistently, and healthy relationships will flourish. At Taikura our vision is that every student progresses towards becoming a free, responsible and caring individual able to impart purpose and direction in their life, and contribute in manifold as well as unique ways to society.

Last week at Taikura, we celebrated Mid Winter through the Winter Spiral. For children in the Lower and Middle School, walking the spiral is a quiet, reverent experience. A single candle burns at the centre of the spiral. One by one, each child walks inward, lights their candle, and places it along the spiral path. As more candles are lit, the spiral begins to glow, and the room fills with gentle light.
It may take courage for a child to walk alone. But as the light grows, wonder shines in their eyes. As the old saying goes, “Wisdom begins with wonder.”
For the High School, the celebration takes a different form. Students place tea lights on a large world map—marking places where people are experiencing darkness and need our thoughts and prayers, or where light is shining and deserves recognition. Whether literal or symbolic, the light within each of us can be acknowledged and encouraged to shine.

Following the Government’s recent announcement regarding changes to the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) programme, the Taikura Board would like to reassure our community that these changes will have no impact on the New Zealand Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE) programme offered in our high school.

Steiner Waldorf education is a holistic approach that nurtures the development of each ākonga (learner). At Taikura Rudolf Steiner School, we are committed to supporting the growth of the whole ākonga — academically, artistically, socially, emotionally, and practically. We aim to understand and meet the needs of each ākonga, helping them to become capable, well-rounded individuals.

In high school, the Steiner Waldorf curriculum balances strong academic study alongside artistic work, practical skills, movement, outdoor education, and meaningful community connection. This integrated approach supports ākonga to develop intellectual curiosity, practical capability, emotional resilience, and a strong sense of purpose.

Our high school curriculum includes compulsory studies in the Humanities, Sciences, the Arts, Technologies, Drama, English, Te Reo Māori, Physical Education, Eurythmy, Music and Mathematics alongside a broad range of elective subjects in the senior two years including Social Sciences, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Visual Art, Digital Technology, Soft and Hard Materials and Music.

The NZCSE is fully accredited and quality assured by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Through achieving NZCSE at Level 3 ākonga can gain university entrance. The qualification is recognised by universities and tertiary providers throughout New Zealand, and internationally, providing our ākonga with opportunities to pursue further tertiary education overseas. Taikura graduates consistently move successfully into university study, apprenticeships, employment, and a wide range of fulfilling life pathways.

We believe Taikura’s unique, broad and robust curriculum supports each ākonga throughout their secondary education journey, preparing them not only for further study and employment, but also for meaningful participation in the wider world.
