It’s been brought to my attention recently that “cashback” offers are happening & our families signing up are not properly informed.

This is where things can get misunderstood, and it can be an overwhelming in the long run

That “cashback” you’re being offered?
It’s not always free money.

In many cases:
➡️ It’s added onto your loan
➡️ It’s charged interest
➡️ You repay it over time

So while it might feel like a win upfront…
it can cost you more in the long run.

you need to know:

✔️ What is my total repayment?
✔️ Is this clearly written in my contract?

🌺 Thinking about my parents…
and what it must have felt like leaving the islands, and migrating to New Zealand in the early 70s.

A new country.
A new system.
A new culture.

I reflect on this often when I’m coaching and mentoring our Pacific families; their adults kids, and new migrants navigating life here for the first time.

I keep coming back to one question…

What if financial education was compulsory for our Pacific families BEFORE migration?

What if there had been preparation before leaving the islands — before arriving in what many call the “land of milk and honey”?

What if someone had sat them down and said:

“This is how money works here.”
“This is the difference between good debt and bad debt.”
“This is how you prepare for homeownership.”
“This is how you plan, save, and navigate the financial system.”

Would things have been different?

Would the journey have been a little clearer?

I believe so. 💯

I hear this every day in my work:

“I wish I knew this before I took out that $40k car loan.”
“I wish I understood this before I signed that $10k credit card.”
“No one in my family owns a home, so I didn’t think it was possible for me”

That’s the reality for many of our families —not from lack of effort, but from lack of access to information.
