This week our kura celebrated Te wiki o te reo Māori. Each class researched an area local to us and presented what they learnt at assembly. We found out some interesting new facts about Māori place names and sung some wonderful waiata together. It was a lovely celebration of te reo Māori. Some of the Kapa Haka group also took the junior classes through some waiata.

The school was given 3 spare rugby tickets to the Waikato Vs Manawatu NPC game tomorrow 5pm start. If anyone would like them please pick them up from office between 3-3.30pm this afternoon.

Vision and Hearing Checks in School at St Peter Chanel Catholic School

Date: Friday 11th September 2026

As a provider of a health screening service we have a responsibility to comply with the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers Rights.
This includes the requirement to provide information, enabling consumers to make an informed choice.

Information Sheet on Vision and Hearing Checks

Vision Hearing Technicians from Community and Southern Rural Health will be visiting our school. The objective of the test is to identify previously undetected vision and hearing problems.
Which children are routinely checked?
- Children who have not completed vision and hearing checks as part of their B4 School Check
- Children absent from previous visit, require rescreens or follow up
- New Immigrants
- Year 7 student’s vision only

If there is a genuine hearing concern, parents/caregivers or teachers may request a hearing check - NB parents must consent to this. The Vision Hearing Technician will only be able to undertake a maximum of 5 screens on any visit. If there is a concern regarding vision, parents/caregivers are encouraged to seek advice from an optometrist. A subsidy is available for families/whanau that have a Community Services card or High Use Health card.

What tests are carried out?
Ears
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Tympanometry – middle ear function test (only carried out when hearing test is not within a normal range)
Eyes
Long distance vision tests – not a complete visual examination, but a simple screening test
NB All of these checks are non-invasive, safe and should cause no discomfort.
The Vision Hearing Technician will:
- Notify parents/caregivers of all test results
- Enter results on Ministry of Education database (Enrol)
The Vision Hearing Technician will obtain personal details from the school ie; names, date of birth.
If the technician needs to contact parents/caregivers following the visit, addresses and phone numbers will also be required.
Our Service may share this information with other health professionals involved in the children’s care.
If any parents/caregivers do not want their child to be checked, or their child is currently under specialist care for their vision or hearing, they should let the school know.

Information Sheet on Year 7 Vision Screening

Vision Hearing Technicians from Community and Southern Rural Health will be visiting our school. The objective of the vision check is to identify previously undetected vision defects.
The check that is carried out is long distance vision tests on all Year 7 students.
If any parents/caregivers do not want their child to be checked, or their child is currently under specialist care for a vision defect, they should let the school know.
This will not be a complete vision examination, but a simple screening test. When an unsatisfactory result is obtained, it will be necessary for the Technician to obtain personal details ie; home address and date of birth, and parents/caregivers will be asked to seek further advice.
Our Service may share health information gathered in this way with other Health Professionals involved in the student’s care.
