My Face, My Way
Tamariki look closely at a photo of themselves and use it as inspiration to create their own self-portrait. They choose colours, shapes, and lines to show how they see themselves.

This experience supports Te Whāriki | Mana Atua, Mana Whenua, and Mana Reo, encouraging tamariki to develop a sense of identity, confidence, belonging, and creative expression.

❤️Ako Learning – Our Flower Hunt ❤️

Today our Ako learning took us on a flower hunt. Our plan was to collect flowers and use them to create some beautiful little gardens in the sandpit.

The tamariki were excited to search for different flowers, colours and natural treasures. As we collected our flowers, the idea began to grow and change.

What started as a plan to build sandpit gardens soon turned into something even more creative — cupcake gardens!

The tamariki used their imaginations to create their own little garden cupcakes, carefully choosing flowers and natural materials to decorate them. They talked about their creations, shared ideas with one another and proudly showed off their finished masterpieces.

This is the beauty of Ako — learning is not always about following the plan. Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens when we follow the children’s ideas, interests and imagination.

Through this experience, the tamariki explored creativity, communication, problem-solving, cooperation and connection with the natural environment.

Today we made our own pizza bases!As Friday is our baking day, each week we embark on a new baking adventure, creating something delicious for everyone to enjoy.

Baking provides so many rich learning experiences for our tamariki. To them, it is simply cooking, mixing, creating and enjoying something they have made themselves — but behind the scenes, there is so much learning taking place!

As we measure ingredients, we are exploring mathematics — counting, measuring, comparing quantities and noticing how much we need.

As we mix, knead and watch our dough change, we are exploring science — observing how ingredients combine, how the dough changes texture and how yeast helps the dough rise.

The beautiful thing is that our tamariki don’t need to know they are learning mathematics or science. They are simply having fun, working together and creating something they can proudly say, “I made that!”

This is the magic of learning through play and meaningful experiences — the learning is there, even when the tamariki don’t realise they are learning.

There’s nothing quite like a good puddle after the rain! Today, our natural environment provided the perfect invitation for mud cooking, puddle stomping, splashing, exploring, and lots of imaginative play. 🌿👣

The children embraced the wet weather, getting curious, creative, and wonderfully muddy as they discovered all the possibilities a rainy day has to offer.

Because sometimes the best learning happens with muddy hands and wet feet

Each day, we look at how we can care for and nurture our environment, recognising that the environment is our third teacher.

We have started looking closely at our gardens and thinking about what they need for the coming months. Together, our tamariki and kaiako are exploring what we can plant, grow, nurture and care for as the seasons change.

When we look through a Māori lens, we can see that our gardens are much more than just places where plants grow. The insects, bugs, plants, trees, soil, water and people are all connected. Each has an important part to play in creating and sustaining our natural environment.

Through caring for our gardens, our tamariki are developing an understanding of kaitiakitanga — caring for and protecting our environment. They are learning that we are not separate from nature; we are part of it.

Our gardens become places of discovery, curiosity, science, mathematics, communication and connection. They provide opportunities for tamariki to observe, question, problem-solve and learn through hands-on experiences.
