Kia ora e te whānau,
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families who have joined us this year. Our pōwhiri was well attended, with the largest group we have seen in recent years. It is an exciting time as our kura continues to flourish with several new enrolments.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the preparation and running of the pōwhiri. It was a special occasion as we welcomed two new teachers and three new learning assistants. Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to the Bankwood team.

Final newsletter of the year. A big mihi to Whaea Melodi Popham, nō Ngāti Wairere, in the office for putting this together each fortnight. She does a fantastic job working with teachers and leadership, gathering images, stories, and dates, then using her creative flair to turn them into an engaging digital display. All of this is done within a very short timeframe and truly reflects the positive mahi happening across our kura.
Tēnei te mihi nunui ki a koe, Whaea Melodi.
Again, like last year, our whole school returned to Hukanui Marae. Our visit was designed to deepen our relationship with Hukanui Marae and Ngāti Wairere, grounding our learning in the mana and knowledge of our local iwi.
Key Learning Goals
- Strengthen our partnership with Hukanui Marae and Ngāti Wairere through shared experiences and ongoing whanaungatanga.
- Take part in a marae-based pōwhiri, allowing kaiako and ākonga to experience tikanga in context and use this understanding to enrich the pōwhiri we hold at kura.
- Connect classroom learning to local history, drawing on kōrero shared by kaumātua and local historians to bring authenticity and relevance to our curriculum.
Workshops and Activities
This year, we switched things up with our workshops. As with last year, the sessions were designed to add depth and richness to the learning goals above. They offered a range of ways to engage, including hands-on, creative, and movement-based activities to support all ākonga, including those who learn differently.
Our tamariki had an amazing time at the marae.
A huge thanks goes out to Hukanui Marae, Whaea Ihipera and Matua Ted for hosting us over two days of powerful wānanga filled with tikanga, hītori, kēmu and kai. We also acknowledge the kaimahi on the ground at Hukanui Marae, Whaea Ngahuia, Whaea Rae, Whaea Emma, Whaea Meeki, Matua Rangiwai, Matua Kobe, and Whaea Huarangi for their guidance, aroha and support.
Ngā mihi,
On Tuesday we held our annual end-of-year Fun Day, and it was packed with excitement, joy and plenty of smiles. Our tamariki loved the range of activities on offer, from the ever-popular inflatables and water slides to the water play areas, swimming, and many other fun options throughout the day.
