We were proud to host the Chess Power Hamilton Regional Tournament last week, with students from 14 schools throughout the Waikato attending to show their mastery of the board. The HBHS hall was buzzing with concentration and excitement throughout the day, and we would like to thank those who helped make the competition such a success. The Hamilton Boys' team competed hard throughout the day and came second, which means they have qualified for the national Chess Power competition later this year. We wish them the very best!

Hamilton Boys' High School has made a triumphant and highly anticipated return to the Big Sing regional stage for the first time in over a decade! Representing our kura with the brand-new ensemble Vocal Ocean, the boys performed exceptionally well, conducted themselves with immense mana, and served as outstanding ambassadors for our school.
The 21-strong group delivered a powerful and dynamic set that showcased both their technical growth and their collective spirit. They performed "The Sweetest Kick" by Stephen Taberner and "People of the Sea" by Dr Igelese Ete, with featured soloists Travis Porter, Lauva Havea, Mure Omoyeni, and Ashton Apihai Joyce.
A live band of Lale Ieremia-Allen, Hamish Smith, Ashton King, and Jack Murphy supported the singers and the day culminated in a heartfelt, powerful haka performed by the boys to their HBHS Choir Tutor Whaea Baker.
Vocal Ocean is just beginning, and raising our voice with heads held high at this regional festival marks a proud foundation for the future of vocal music at HBHS.

TOMORROW IS THE DAY⚽ BROTHERHOOD FOOTBALL MATCH 2026
In commemoration of World Refugee Day, the Multicultural Manaaki Centre will be holding its annual Brotherhood Football Match on Wednesday June 17 (Week 9). We would like to invite MMC alumni, along with all HBHS students to support this prestigious event as we celebrate World Refugee Day. This day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the culture of all our students at Hamilton Boys', taking pride in the sense of brotherhood within our school community. The 2026 theme for World Refugee Day is Courage.
Beginning in 2019, the Brotherhood Football Match will see the MMC football team face off against the All Stars team comprised of other HBHS students. Like every year, this promises to be a fiery, but sportsmanlike competition in high spirits. Following the game, players and special guests are invited to a presentation with refreshments in the HBHS pavilion. Here, we will recognise and award standout player performances as we celebrate World Refugee Day.
Throughout the week, all HBHS students will participate in World Refugee Day-themed quizzes in morning tutor group sessions. There will also be a larger quiz held in the library on Tuesday June 16 for anyone wishing to compete. All Year 9 students will also be given the opportunity to participate in a poster competition, based on the 2026 World Refugee Day theme of Courage. We look forward to celebrating the camaraderie and pride within our school during this week.

Our International Outdoor Education class got to experience riding the rapids in Rotorua on an exciting trip to Kaituna River last month. Nineteen boys from China, Fiji, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey and the United States - all of whom are currently studying at HBHS - loved the high-adrenaline adventure. With 11 wild rapids and three epic waterfalls, including the world-famous 7-metre Tutea Falls, it was a truly jaw-dropping Kiwi experience that has made these students memories for a lifetime.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Taylor Rota on an outstanding performance at the recent United World Wrestling (UWW) Asia & Pacific Youth Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam. Taylor completely dominated the Under 17 110kg division, executing a complete takedown of the competition to earn gold medals in both Grappling and Pankration. His wins are an awesome achievement to be celebrated by both HBHS and his home gym, Core MMA, here in Hamilton. Taylor's dedication on the mats has truly shown what hard work can achieve!
