Representing New Zealand at the 2026 Sub-Junior & Junior IPF World Powerlifting Championships in South Africa earlier this year, Year 12 student Elijah Yang delivered an outstanding performance in the U83kg Sub-Junior (U19) division.

This achievement is even more impressive given that his very first competition was only in February of this year.

Despite battling jet lag, Elijah secured two new competition personal bests and claimed a 12th-place finish worldwide.

Competition Results:
• Squat: 200kg (Personal Best)
• Bench Press: 107.5kg
• Deadlift: 227.5kg (Personal Best)
• Ranking: (12th Place)

With World Championship experience now under his belt, the foundation is set as he turns his focus eagerly toward next year.

Our senior Hospitality students have been hard at work in the kitchen this term, baking up a storm for their NCEA assessments.

Beyond mastering practical techniques, they’ve been studying the science of baking, focusing on ingredient functions and quality standards for everything from cakes and sponges to scones and breads.

It was a challenging hands-on unit, but the results speak for themselves!

Congratulations are in order for Yr 10 student, Daniel Mumby, who earned an impressive Silver Medal at the 2026 NZSS Duathlon Championships held at Māngere Bridge in Auckland last weekend.

Facing wet and wild weather alongside top competitors from all over New Zealand, Daniel showed real determination to power through the course and conditions.

Competing in the U16 Men’s division, he finished in 2nd place with a time of 47:00 across the 3.5km run, 15km bike, and 2.5km run legs.

Congratulations on an outstanding national performance, Daniel!

While our Senior Premier team is still gearing up to take on Nationals, we took the time last night to recognize our outstanding athletes across all our teams at our end-of-year Prizegiving.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Basketball Captain Ethan Spraggon, who did a great job guiding us through the celebration. Teacher in Charge (TIC) of Basketball, Murray McKenzie, shared a heartfelt thanks to all our coaches, parents, and players for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.

Special mention to the winner of the Baldwin Cup for Most Outstanding Junior Basketball Player, Struan Wood. Congratulations Struan, and to all our other recipients listed below:

Recently, we entered an U15 Rugby League team to compete in the NZRL Junior Tournament in Auckland, where the boys earned an impressive 8th-place national finish in our third consecutive year at the event.

Driven by a strong commitment and thorough preparation leading up to the tournament, the squad demonstrated incredible growth and a deep passion for rugby league at HBHS.

Led by coaches Paeturi Maletino and Shannon Tomuri, alongside manager Jean Middleton, the team showed resilience and character across every match:

• vs. St Patrick’s College: Win (22–16)
• vs. Te Kura o Te Kaiu / Te Haikura a Kiwa: Loss (16–18)
• vs. Tokoroa High School: Loss (14–30)
• Quarter-Final vs. Manurewa High School: Loss (4–38)

Throughout the campaign, the boys played with great heart and sportsmanship, representing Hamilton Boys' High School and honouring the lion on their chest both on and off the field.

Our U55kg Maroon Rugby Team played in the WSS final at Hauraki Plains College last weekend.

They set the tone right from the start, performing a powerful haka for the first time, before delivering their best performance of the season to finish tied at 12-12.

Unfortunately, under WSS rules, tied finals are awarded to the team that scored the first try, meaning Hauraki Plains College took home the trophy. While it was a heartbreaking way to finish, the boys showed incredible heart.

Congratulations to Year 11 student Jefferson Lovelock on his selection for the Waikato Under 19 golf team, where he joins Old Boy Isaac Steel in the four-man squad.

Their selection adds to the school's strong golf pedigree, which also features fellow Old Boy Steve Alker and his recent three-tournament winning streak on the Champions Tour.

We wish both Jefferson and Isaac all the best as they represent the region!

Representing the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country team, Max and Jack Stirling travelled to Ballarat, Australia in August to compete in the Australian Cross Country Championships.

Competing in the U17 6km event, both boys faced a gruelling course rendered exceptionally muddy and slippery after a week of heavy rain. Despite the conditions, they delivered outstanding performances in an elite field with Max claiming the silver medal with a stellar 2nd-place finish, while Jack capped off a powerful performance to cross the line in 4th.

Together with a teammate who claimed 3rd place, the Kiwi runners dominated the top of the field, securing an impressive 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finish for New Zealand.

Amazing results, boys!
