Exploring Maths in Art 🌿
Kia orana! This morning our friends investigated patterns and symmetry woven through Cook Island art as we celebrate and explore Cook Island language week.
Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ’Āirani 2026 theme is “Me kite koe i te tuatua i to'ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō'ou no te uki amuri atu,” which translates to "With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future".
Symmetry in art is a visual expression of mathematical balance, where shapes, lines, and colors mirror or rotate to create order and harmony.
Cook Islands art naturally embeds complex mathematics and geometry, particularly through tivaevae- ceremonial patchwork quilting, traditional wood carvings, and woven crafts.
