The event was attended by Jaden's family, his former classmates, former Melville High School staff and board members, tangata whenua, and members of the Cambodian community.

Clarification: NOT A MERGER
Kia ora koutou. There is some confusion regarding some of the technical aspects of this process. Whilst this appears to be a merger on the face of it due to the use of the same property, it is not a merger.
A merger would maintain one of the board of trustees, maintain majority of the staff, offer first rights of employment to existing staff, retain student information, and retain non-capital assets such as teaching resources (paper-based) and intellectual property.
This is the CLOSURE OF TWO SCHOOLS, and the ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW SCHOOL.
A closure means all staff are terminated and all student information is either archived with the Ministry of Education or destroyed.
The new school has no relationship with the closed schools except, through the ministry of education, the inheritance of the assets of the closed schools.
It is illegal for the closed schools to transfer any student information due to the privacy act without expressed written permission from caregivers.
Melville High School has worked hard to meet the legal obligations of a closing school to archive or destroy private student and staff information. It has been a long and harrowing process that staff have had to accomplish whilst maintaining their existing teaching load.
Students intending to study at Mangakootukutuku College must enroll themselves as the closing schools lack the legal authority to do so on their behalf.

Today marks the final day for most Melville High School staff with only a handful remaining behind to complete the final closure procedures.
Over 70 staff were farewelled by team leaders in a very emotional end. Many will never pass through these gates again.
To you we say
Thank you for being a pillar of our community.
You are the stones that stood erect, holding the roof that sheltered our rangatahi as they grew and blossomed. The world thew everything at you and whilst all around was collapsing, you stood fast, keeping that shelter aloft. Without you our rangatahi would be battered and bruised, crushed under the tiles that once protected them. You did not falter in your service. You did not falter in your work. Though the shelter must now inevitably come down, we know you will go on to be the pillars in other communities, nurturing the youth of today, the leaders of tomorrow. Melville owes you a debt of gratitude. A debt so priceless it can never be paid.
Hei awhina hei mahi. May you embody these values wherever you go.
It has been a pleasure to serve and to work with you all.

An article regarding the inequity our community faces. Principal Clive Hamill called on the community to lobby the Ministry of Education to challenge this inequity at Prizegiving yesterday.
Two Hamilton schools to be replaced by one: 'We're bitterly disappointed'
A Hamilton community feels bitterly betrayed about two schools being closed, only to be reopened on the same site, with the same facilities - but with a new name.

Māori Storytelling Unit
Students were tasked with crafting their unique Māori myths, drawing from established Māori deities for inspiration. Their objective was to centre on the act of creation and spin a narrative rooted in traditional storytelling elements. It's important to clarify that while these stories may mention real Māori gods, everything else within them is entirely fictional and the imaginative work of the students.
