Katherine’s support and encouragement shaped the experiences of many Hillary Scholars. Her contribution to our community, and to the development of young musicians, was significant and lasting. She will be greatly missed.
We are saddened by the passing of Katherine Austin, a long-standing and highly respected member of the University of Waikato community.
Katherine had a long association with the University’s music programme. As a renowned pianist and valued tutor, she made an important contribution to the strength of our music offerings and to the learning of generations of students.
She is remembered by colleagues as a musician of rare talent and high standards, who shared her expertise with care and generosity.
Our thoughts are with Katherine’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.

“Ko Tuheitia ki te rangi, ko Te Arikinui Kuīni Nga Wai hono i te po ki te whenua, rire, rire hau, pai mārire."
The University of Waikato would like to congratulate Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po on the first anniversary of her coronation.
A Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar and Alumna of the University who graduated in 2022 with a Master of Arts in Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori, Te Arikinui was instrumental in guiding the team of weavers for The Pā and in 2023 was appointed to the University of Waikato Council.
We celebrate Te Arikinui’s dedication to her people, to the Kīngitanga and the inspiration she provides not only for Māori but for all people across Aotearoa and around the world.
