The Fulton Hogan Immersive Day gave our senior secondary students a real look into the range of career pathways available across the infrastructure industry - from apprenticeships and internships, through to engineering, project management, surveying, machine operation, construction and more.
What made the day so valuable was the access Fulton Hogan gave us to both their projects and their people. Our students got to meet and hear directly from current apprentices and interns about their pathways into the industry, the work they’re doing now and what their experience has been like so far.
We then travelled with the Fulton Hogan team across their major project sites in Drury, guided by their Site Superintendent and wider project team. They walked us through how a project of this scale comes together - from the early planning and design stages, through to the people, machinery and works happening on the ground. We got to walk on the actual site, explore the machinery, check out the full design, and explore the scale of the project from the development of the roads, bridges, structures and more. It was also cool to see how a historical landmark meant they had to shift the road over.
It was such a great opportunity for our students to see it all in action, ask questions directly of the people doing the work, and understand just how many different career pathways sit behind a major infrastructure project. Even better, they got to see the scale of investment and development happening right here in South Auckland and the impact this work will have on the future growth of the region.
