10 years of Flamenco!
Has it been easy? No!
Would we do it all again? Over and over!
It all started at Laura's house, a few of us getting together for the love of it, with the backing our idea. It went through "Bailes La Vide Loca" and more namess but Flamenco had to be Flamenco, too much in itself.
When you migrate and have children, that is a moment when reality hits you and the thought of your little people not getting to know the things that you love from your culture are heavy enough to give you (I am talking about me and the whole community behind this) the power to go through all the mahi (work) to make things happen. No formal training (some of us) but so much passion to make the impossible a reality.
What Flamenco Waikato y Amigos has brought into our lives is unmeasurable. We have been hired by FIFA, we have been part of the opening of the BNZ theatre, we have been the reason for huge fundraising for the Morrinsville Art Gallery... and this doesn't even mention the human connections created. People who have dance with us came from Spain, South America nearly everywhere but also India, the Netherlands, Philippines, Morocco, Japan, Iran, Germany, Israel, Mauritius, China and of course Aotearoa. Well trained dancers have joined and added to our kete (basket). Our guitarists have been the incredible flavor to this group, not just dancing but live music, very talented musicians from Japan, NZ, Australia, France, Spain and Argentina, and later on, we are bringing new music instruments to this Art form that never stops giving.
We don't have a regular venue, we don't have regular hours, we are continuously reinventing ourselves, but we are still very much here and we are not going anywhere. Always learning, always growing and so grateful for each person who has been a part of this experience.
