The school was founded in 1980 from the amalgamation of two schools, St Mary’s High School, operated by the Sisters of Mercy (who arrived in Greymouth in 1882) and Marist Brothers Boys’ School operated by the Marist Brothers (founded in 1892). John Paul II High School was integrated into the State education system by the agreement of the proprietor of the school (the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch) and the Minister of Education in 1983.

A fantastic achievement for Ty Brake

Congratulations to Ty Brake, who recently competed at the Canterbury Boxing Association and came away with a well-earned achievement.

It’s fantastic to see our students putting in the hard work, discipline and determination required to compete in the ring.

Well done, Ty — we’re proud to celebrate your success!

Junior A Basketball | Game Day Recap

Our Junior A Basketball boys had a huge day on Saturday, 30 August, showing plenty of grit, determination and teamwork on court.

The boys opened the day with an impressive 105–69 win over Nelson, before facing two tough games against Kaiapoi (71–85) and John McGlashan (83–96).

Playing huge minutes with just seven players, the team continued to battle hard and represent our school with determination right through to the final whistle.

Well done, boys — fantastic effort!

It was an absolute pleasure to visit Tyler South at his Gateway placement at Ahaura Helicopters yesterday. Tyler has an absolute passion for aviation, and has his sights firmly set on a career as a helicopter pilot. It was awesome to see him actively contributing to his workplace as they used the chopper to spread fertilizer on a farm. We have no doubt that Tyler will be piloting choppers in the not too distant future! Huge thanks to Simon abd Debbie Lawn from Ahaura Helicopters for taking him on, and to pilot Heath for the ride to site! 🚁🚁🚁

Our combined Westland Football team had a fantastic 3–3 draw against Ashburton College, showing incredible determination and fight right to the final whistle. The team was down 3–1 until halfway through the second half, but they never gave up and battled their way back. What a comeback!

To put this achievement into perspective, the Westland team is selected from less than 700 students across four schools Karamea Area School, JPIIHS, WHS and SWAS, spread over an incredible 307 km. In comparison, Ashburton has around 1,450 students from one school, with footballers having the opportunity to play and train together throughout the season.

This makes what these lads have achieved even more impressive! JPII Proud! 👏🙌🤛
