Tournament Week - Day 2 Results

Boys Football in Dunedin:
A tough, windy match saw the boys trail 1-0 for most of the game. They kept battling and were rewarded late in the second half when Ollie Chalmers was fouled, earning a free kick. RJ delivered the ball into the box and Aarav beat the keeper to score a dramatic late equaliser.
Final score: 1-1

Mixed Hockey in Gore:
Two strong performances today:
• Defeated Menzies 7-0
• Defeated CSC Girls 16-0
A special mention to Denan Sheppard, who is currently the tournament's leading goal scorer with 14 goals, well clear of the next highest scorer on 8.

Equestrian in Christchurch:
Mattie McBride competed well today, finishing:
• 7th in Arena Eventing (out of 23 riders)
• 22nd in Dressage (out of 29 riders)

U15 Boys Rugby in Westport:
Game 3 vs Hillmorton
A great contest with plenty of determination from our boys. In a close and hard-fought game, they narrowly went down 17-19.
Scorers:
• Clayton - 7 points
• Harry - 5 points
• Hunter - 5 points

Game 4 vs Waimea
The boys faced a strong Waimea side and, despite several injuries, continued to fight hard throughout the match.
Final score: 5-54
Try scorer: Deegan

Their final game is at 9:50am tomorrow morning against Motueka

Senior A Netball in Nelson:
First game this morning was up against Timaru Girls High School, we got to test some combos and rest some players coming away with a 22-19 win.
Game 2 was against Verdon who are top of our pool. It was a grind to the end in a low scoring, defensive game finishing with a 16-14 loss. Awesome to get all 11 girls on the court.

A big thank you to Josie from Robbie’s Pickles for visiting our Year 10 Foods class and teaching students how to pickle onions.

Josie generously supplied all the onions and ingredients, shared her passion for pickling, and guided students through the process from start to finish. Everyone enjoyed the experience and was able to bottle their own pickled onions to take home.

Tournament Week - Day 1 Results:

Senior A Netball in Nelson
Nelson turned on the sunshine today, although the strong winds added an extra challenge for players on court. The girls started their tournament in style with a convincing 24-7 win over MacKenzie College.
Their second game was a nail-biter against Cromwell College, with the girls narrowly going down 25-24. Trailing by nine goals at halftime, they showed incredible fight and determination to claw their way back into the match. The result didn't go their way, but it was an effort the team can be extremely proud of.

Boys' Football in Dunedin
A cold day in Dunedin, with even a bit of snow during the first match!
Results:
• Lost 0-2 to Taieri College
• Lost 0-3 to Roncalli College
While the scores weren't in our favour today, the boys battled hard in difficult conditions and will be looking to bounce back tomorrow.

Boys' U15 Rugby in Westport
The boys faced tough opposition and some wild weather during their two matches today.
Game 1 vs Darfield
• Loss: 12-64
• Tries: Charlie (7 points) and Trey (5 points)
Strong winds and sideways rain made conditions challenging, but the boys continued to work hard and compete right until the final whistle.
Game 2 vs Ashburton
• Loss: 7-45
• Try: Trey (7 points)
The scoreline doesn't reflect the determination, grit, and resilience shown by the team. There were plenty of positive moments and performances the boys can be proud of as they continue to develop throughout the tournament.

Mixed Hockey in Gore
Playing through some very tough weather at times, the Mixed Hockey team delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Aurora College 18-0. A special shout-out to Denan Sheppard, who scored an incredible double hat-trick.

Equestrian in Christchurch
Mattie McBride competed in the Competitive Trail Riding (CTR) event today, finishing 20th out of 137 riders.
Mattie has two more events tomorrow and another two on Wednesday, and we wish her all the best for the remainder of the competition.

Golf at McLeans Island
The Māruawai Golf Team have wrapped up an awesome few days at the Secondary School Golf Nationals at McLeans Island.
McLeans Island proved to be a challenging course, with tight, tree-lined fairways testing the boys throughout the tournament. Day 1 began in near-perfect conditions before finishing in gale-force winds, while Day 2 saw the heavens open over the final few holes.
Competing against some of New Zealand's best secondary school golfers, the team finished 24th overall, improving on last year's placing. This was a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work and commitment. They also demonstrated excellent golf etiquette, representing themselves and Māruawai College with pride.

This week, 71 students across seven sports will represent our school at Tournament Week around New Zealand.

Football and Senior Boys' Basketball are travelling to Dunedin, Senior A Netball to Nelson, U15 Rugby to Westport, Golf and Equestrian to Christchurch, and Mixed Hockey in Gore.

We wish all of our students a successful week as they compete, challenge themselves, and represent our school with pride.

Congratulations to Te Ihi o Māruawai for a successful stand at Polyfest last week - they really did put the ihi into Te Ihi o Māruawai!

We are incredibly proud of the comittment, dedication, and effort our students showed on stage and can't wait to see how our kapa continues to grow over the years to come. Ka mau te wehi!

Last week, 29 Year 12 PE students spent three days at Coronet Peak, staying at the Arrowtown Camping Ground as part of their work towards Achievement Standards 2.4 and 2.7.

Students had an amazing time on the slopes, learning new skills, challenging themselves, and creating great memories along the way.

A big thank you to Mr Wakushima, Miss Grace, Mrs Harvey, and Mrs Coghlan for their support, and a special thank you to Dan Winkel, who volunteered as a parent helper for the third time!

Thank you to our students and families who generously contributed to our college food appeal. We are proud to be donating 490 cans to the Gore Salvation Army Food Drive, helping to support local families in need.

Student of the week:

Year 7: Lucy Thompson
Lucy is a really kind friend who always looks out for others. In class she will readily help her friends and the teacher, and she always puts her best effort into her learning. Tino pai Lucy!

Year 8: Zoe Heaps
Zoe is a fantastic role model to others. In class she works hard on all her learning task, putting in her absolute best effort. Plus, she always respects the teacher. She is a kind and caring friend who is also really funny. Well done, Zoe!

Year 9 & 10: Jake Pasco
Jake has been making a really great effort in class to focus on his learning and work hard. He asks insightful questions and is showing a lot of diligence lately.

Year 11, 12, 13: Janice Fimone
Janice arrives to every lesson ready to work and does not stop giving the tasks her full effort. She has made great progress and always takes on board feedback and works to improve herself.

As part of our non-uniform day tomorrow, students are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to support families in our community through the Salvation Army.

Donations can be placed on the collection table in the foyer throughout the day. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated and help make a difference for local families in need.
