An invitation for all Caregivers of current year 10 students

Our boys are on the world stage! 🇳🇿

Huge congratulations to Jack Gifford (NZ J19 Elite team & Horouta J19) and Kaea Moetara, Victor Murray, Mahaki Nikora Peri & Rakai Ngatai (Horouta J16), currently competing at the IVF Waka Ama World Sprint Champs in Singapore.

Years of mahi on the awa to get here. The whole GBHS whānau is behind you boys.

With less than two weeks until our teams travel away to national tournaments, now is a good time to thank all the coaches and managers who have supported our teams throughout the winter. A massive thanks also goes to the companies who have provided funding support for GBHS sport, Nateva, Caltex, and Anchor. Their ongoing support helps keep GBHS teams competing against the best schools regionally and nationally.

Last Thursday, two determined teams from Gisborne Boys' High School headed over to Girls' High to test their problem-solving skills at the annual East Coast Junior Maths Competition.

Both squads stepped up to the challenge, tackling tough equations and fast-paced rounds against top talent across the region. Year 13 student Shaun Diver also joined the trip, playing a key supporting role as a dedicated mentor and marker for the event.

Year 9 Team: Aston Lawton, Bruno Devcich, Ayrton Paton-Walker, and Caden McGoverne

Year 10 Team: Caleb Treweek, Matthew Callaghan, Jason Jiang, and Arthur Wrenn

Both teams displayed outstanding courage throughout the contest, making themselves and the entire GBHS community extremely proud!

That's a wrap on the season for the 1st XV, and it's one worth being proud of.

The numbers tell part of it. This squad scored more points than any GBHS 1st XV since 2018 and finished with the best points differential since that same year. Their 11 competition points equalled 2018 and 2020; in those seasons it was good for 6th, this year it landed us 7th, our highest finish since 2020.

But the part that doesn't show up on the table is the one we'll remember. Three field sessions a week. Two gym sessions in the cold and the dark, before most of the city was awake. The majority of the squad at more than 85% of them. And on their day off, they were out mentoring younger boys through the school's Courage Cup — showing the next group exactly how a 1st XV player carries himself.

That kind of commitment doesn't happen on its own. Thank you to the parents and families who brought into the vision, did the early starts, the washing, the driving and the sideline support all season — you've been part of this too.

To the players and management: thank you for the season, and for the standard you've set. Well done, team.

🎓 A $5,000 scholarship could help kickstart your future.

Applications are closing soon for EIT's 2027 School Leaver Scholarships. EIT are awarding 10 scholarships worth $5,000 each to eligible secondary school students from Tairāwhiti who are planning to study a bachelor's degree at EIT in 2027.

1st XV Rugby

The 1st XV Rugby season concluded on Saturday with defeat to Napier BHS in the Hurricanes SS playoffs. It was not the result we were chasing on the weekend against a tough Napier Boys' High School side, but every single boy left everything out on the field.

While the final whistle didn't blow in our favour, it doesn't take away from the incredible work ethic, growth, and brotherhood this squad has shown throughout the season and the Super 8 campaign. From the early morning strength sessions to grinding out tough phases on match days, the boys represented the black jersey with immense pride and heart.
