Kia ora whānau..an exciting opportunity for PLD...the best!
Last week Matua Jay was asked by Matua Hoturoa Kerr if he would take on the opportunity to travel to Micronesia (yup way up in the Pacific moana) to voyage with the local iwi taketake (indigenous) whanau of Micronesia, from the islands of Satawal and Pohnpei. The Vaka Motu which is sponsored by Okeanos Foundation..funded Matua Jay and another crew member from Te Toki to fly all the way to this island of Pohnpeil. 4 flights and 2 days later...Matua Jay is now prepping the waka and settling in to this island life before he sails on a 2 week voyage to Vanuatu. An opportunity to learn about wayfinding from the experts of Satawal.
Our kura support Matua Jay in building his knowledge and matauranga in Waka Hourua and voyaging. This is also a cool opportunity for our ākonga to learn about this place in the pacific track the waka and make those connections with our voyaging whanau.
Kia haumaru te haere!
PS: Cool little video about the waka that he will be sailing on,,Okeanos Messenger..if you want to check out this waka

We have had to close school last week, Thursday and Friday as our pahi was unable to drive on the road and another weather event! Today we still couldn't travel to Whangara so our Kaiti kura whānau welcomed us into their space at short notice. We appreciated the manaakitanga and aroha from the Koka Billie Jean and the kaiako, tamariki o te kura nei.

Te timatanga o te wahanga 2! Always awesome to welcome new whanau to our kura to make sure they are welcomed to our kura whanau!!! We also checked out the new fence around the perimeter of our kura to keep our akonga safe!!! The Pomana whanau have been working hard to get the mahi done! Matua Jay also showed the native trees which were planted 15 plus years ago which we can see now!!!

So today was a teacher only day… and an opportunity for us to begin exploring Te Mataioho (NZ curriculum refresh). We learnt about the whakapapa of Te Mataioho from Dr Wayne Ngata- so awesome! We are feeling inspired and excited about these changes! We did this with no power- a good ole power cut all day… and it was makariri!

This term we have not been able to have our usual 'Hikitai'..out there in the Taiao opportunities due to the impact on the moana and awa...so we are making the most of the hoiho!
