Awesome day today. We were very fortunate to have the Tairāwhiti Waka whānau visit and teach about voyaging waka, waka taurua (double-hulled canoes), knot tying, the different parts of the waka, reading the stars, observing birds, understanding tides, winds, and the sun for navigation. The tamariki greatly enjoyed learning from the whānau and gained valuable insights into this important mātauranga Māori. The whānau also told us that they will return in the summer to take the tamariki aboard the waka at Te Wherowhero. We are all very excited and eagerly looking forward to this waka experience.

Big mihi to everyone that supported the Muriwai shop on Friday. Everyone enjoyed their ice-cream and it was awesome to see the tamariki using their pāngarau skills.
We also had a pukapuka aroha (black book) for those that forgot their pūtea or didn’t get the memo. Those tamariki know who they are and will let their parents know. Next shop will be run by Matukumoana.
Also on Friday, our Te Māhuri boys went out to hauhake our kūmara and tidy up our mara. It wasn’t the best harvest, but there were some really good learnings we took from it, and we now know what we can do better next time. Big mihi to matua Pare for bringing his tractor down to wack down all the weeds.
Ngā mihi whānau.
