I woke this morning,
with a fire in my puku,
to put words to my thoughts,
after 2 weeks with my one and only moko in our bubble,
and felt a need to go into battle in the spirit as well as in the natural to protect him,
as a Lioness would do for her cub , at all costs.
The weapons we have, are powerful.
Power of prayer.
The warrior spirit from our tupuna,
namely wisdom ,
foresight ,
deligence,
courage which we carry in our DNA,
a me te tikanga manakitanga.
We also have the power of the spoken word,
to shift ,
to declare,
to create,
to restore,
to build strength....

May this korero be a reminder, of who we are and what we carry.

I had the pleasure of meeting Riria a few months back, she got invited down here to chch to run a Te Reo wananga after our church service. I heard her korero during the service and was blown away by her in-depth Whakaaro/insight. Hearing Riria speak made me realise that one kupu in Te Reo Maori can be likened to a tree, & like any tree there are roots & also fruit to picked off its branches to nourish yourself. As one word, one kupu, can be broken down into syllables, you’ll be amazed at the poetry & message that is found within one kupu.

Before the wananga we were having lunch, I went to introduce myself and sat next to Riria, as the conversation went on we made a few connections and realised that we were whanau. I asked her if she could interpret my last name? When she broke my last name down for me it left me with tears streaming down my face, the message within my own last name was so beautiful and powerful.

Since then I’ve remained in contact with Riria - whom I now call Aunty. Myself, alongside 2 other friends have been having zoom wananga 3 times a week for the past 2 months with Riria, with the concept of simply getting to the very foundation of ‘Pepeha’ and all that it entails. My time and learnings with Riria have been something that money can’t buy. Her in depth knowledge of Te Reo, her spiritual insight, the way she articulates and teaches the ‘Ha’ within Te Reo has been the best experience I’ve ever had from any orator or teacher of our sacred language. If you have a passion in learning the Reo from an in-depth perspective, then you won’t be let down from Riria, if anything learning from Riria will change & reveal how heavenly & connected our language really is. - Josh Koia
