The sound-shell mural is complete! It was designed and painted by Year 12 students, Julia Hopkins and Emily Guylee, assisted by Stephanie Straka.

It was important that the mural reflected and connected with the destination space and that space's purpose. The sound-shell is primarily a performance space for both Music and Drama students, but it is also a space for students to meet, connect, socialize and even shelter! The multi-faceted use of the sound-shell space lends itself perfectly to the styles that Julia and Emily chose as a lift-off point; Cubism and the Memphis style. Both art movements are characterized by the use of flat, geometric shapes which at times interconnect. Julia and Emily have taken subject matter from both music and drama as inspiration and through a process of deconstruction, simplification and reconnection of shapes, they have created a high energy, dynamic composition. The Memphis style influence is also evident in the use of ‘loud’ colour. The vibrant colour palette echoes the creative and social activities that take place within the sound-shell on a regular basis. The mural relates to the wider school values with keywords of “Engage, Belong, Succeed” being incorporated into the kowhaiwhai pattern, which interweaves with the other design elements.
