We have been working hard this term preparing for our Art Exhibition in the last week of the school term.

Tamariki have been engaged in lots of creative mahi that centre's around themselves as individuals within their community. They have done self portraits, photography, collaborative and individual abstract pieces, made mirrors and sculptures.

To support their creative thinking and confidence we have been exploring the book 'Ish' by Peter Reynolds and how art doesn't have to look just right, It can be ish.

So, watch this space for our art and donated works from artists in our community. We will be having an auction📸🖌🖍🖼🎨

On Monday we had a magical experience watching Birdlife Productions' puppet show 'Peter and the box of birds' 🦉

Our tamariki and kaiako were captivated by their story, beautiful hand crafted puppets and live music.

Thank you to Bridget and Rodger for bringing in your mastery and creating magic for us all to enjoy.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Kindy Disco on Saturday! All proceeds raised will go towards providing fun educational experiences through our regular visitors.
Also big thanks to our Kindergarten Committee for supporting us, to Muritai School for enabling us to boogie in the school hall and to Gen Packer and her team for creating an amazing space for us to let loose!

The Kaiako have been learning more about the Maramataka - the māori lunar calender. We have been looking to this to guide our practise in the māra-garden, the activities we plan with the tamariki and the energy of te marama - the moon.

Today is Tirea, the first day of the new moon and lunar month and it suggests we pay attention to our surroundings and taking the time to notice things we might not normally see and how this can help us feel more present and connected. This morning one of our young tamariki spotted and pointed out a Kererū in our Pohutukawa tree. As we all stopped, hushed and gazed up at it's beauty we noticed there were actually not just 1 but 3 Kererū resting among the branches.

A special moment that reflected the notion that if we take the time to slow down, pause and look around, we will notice things we wouldn't normally. Aren't we lucky, Ataahua!

Reconnecting with te tapatai! Last Friday we braved the chilly wind and ventured back down to our Rona Beach!

We had an awesome time discovering all the treasure tangaroa had left for us and bought some back for everyone to explore!

One pretty exciting find was lots of tiny Kōwhai seeds. We plan to look to the maramataka to guide us and we will sew them when the time is right. It will be exciting to see if we can help this treasure grow! 🦀🐚 🌱

Loose part play is still a big part of our day!

Tamariki are free to create, manipulate, test and work together using open-ended resources.
From Gladiator castles to lava rivers, these, (often free) play materials enable them to bring their ideas to life.

Today Chloe from Enviroschools came to talk to us about the long journey our tuna - eels from our local awa take to migrate all the way from New Zealand to Tonga!

To help understand how hard it might be for them she invited us to pretend to be tuna as they navigate their way. Trying not to get caught in fishing nets or traps they traveled, through the awa, over wet lands, ate some kai on the way, then felt their way out into the moana. We know they can't see very well, so they instictively listen for the moana to call to them.

Chloe then showed us how to make tuna ladders out of our fallen tī kōuka - cabbage tree leaves we had been soaking. First she shared karakia, thanking the ti kōuka for the fallen leaves before plaiting them into a ladder. These ladders help the tuna climb their way through the pipes or over shallow parts of the awa and no plastic used either. Win for the tuna, win for the environment!

We have a new appreciation for their journey and thanks Chloe for our new learning!

There is always room for a little magic and make believe...

Yesterday in response to an interest in digging for treasure and pirates, we embraced the wonderful world pirates!

We climbed aboard a pirate ship and set sail for adventure, we made telescopes, dug for buried treasure and even walked the plank.

At EHK we are passionate about creating an environment that not only supports life long learning, but magical memories too.
