Maui and the sun legend was the hot topic at kindergarten this morning. Children were supported to make links to a real life photo of the harakeke (flax) ropes that Maui and his brothers used to slow the sun down (the suns rays)…. The older tamariki visit whānaup**i (Flagstaff) on Wednesday mornings. Ko whānaup**i te mauka (Flagstaff js the mountain that is special to our kindergarten). In exploring the ngahere, our tamariki develop a love for our land, strengthen their bodies, develop curiosity and sense of adventure 🌿 Climbing, balancing and discovering together encourages physical learning, confidence and connection to the natural world around us

Learning doesn’t always sit at a table — sometimes it stands beside a tub with a towel and a very patient dog. 🐶
What might look like a fun experience is actually rich with learning and intentional teaching — caring for living things, understanding hygiene, exploring water concepts (wet/dry, warm/cold), and building empathy and responsibility.
It also creates space for language development, questioning, and real-world connections.
When everyday moments are thoughtfully facilitated and linked to learning, that’s intentional teaching.

Intentional teaching can be clearly seen in mat time moments. When the kaiako gather children together, introduce visuals, ask open-ended questions, and guide discussion — that’s purposeful teaching. It might look simple, but there’s intention behind the language used, the concepts introduced, and the way children are supported to listen, think and contribute.
Mat time is also a powerful space for building early numeracy — through counting, sorting, recognising patterns, and exploring mathematical ideas in meaningful ways. At the same time, it nurtures children’s confidence to speak in a group, share ideas, take turns, and have their thinking valued.
There is intentional teaching in every experienced chosen, question, pause, and moment of encouragement.
