The Faculty of Dentistry is deeply saddened by the loss of Emeritus Professor John Broughton.
It is difficult to capture in a few words the profound impact John had on our Faculty, our profession, and the many people whose lives he touched. The loss we feel is immense.
John's commitment to improving oral health in Aotearoa New Zealand, particularly for Māori communities, helped shape generations of practice, teaching, research and advocacy. Through his leadership, scholarship and unwavering dedication, he inspired countless students, colleagues and health professionals.
Beyond his professional achievements, John will be remembered for his gracious presence within the Faculty, his quiet humour, thoughtful conversations, and his wide-ranging interests in history, art, culture, rugby and the military. Most of all, he will be remembered for his passion and determination to advance equitable healthcare, ensuring that care recognised cultural needs and upheld the mana of Māori whānau.
A whakataukī that John often shared was:
"Hapaitia te ara tika pūmau ai te rangatiratanga mō ngā uri whakatipu"
"Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence and growth for future generations."
Although John retired from the University, he never truly left. He remained a valued presence within the Faculty, generously sharing his wisdom, experience and friendship.
We extend our deepest sympathy to John's whānau, friends, colleagues, tauira, and the many people whose lives he enriched throughout his remarkable life.
