Today is a truly ground-breaking moment in human history as people travel around the far side of the Moon, something only a handful of missions have ever achieved, and a huge step toward future space exploration. This is part of the NASA Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually prepare for missions to Mars. During this mission, astronauts will orbit (move in a curved path around a planet, moon, or star because of gravity) the Moon, including passing behind it where communication with Earth is temporarily lost, an exciting and slightly mysterious part of the journey!
Here is a simple timeline for today in New Zealand time (NZST) so you can follow along: Watch Live on NASA's Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/live/z-j1uxBmis0?si=R7yIRN20VlJsODsp
Morning (around 10:00–11:00am): Final preparations and live coverage begins
Midday (around 12:00–1:00pm): Spacecraft approaches the Moon
Early afternoon (around 1:30–2:30pm): Travels behind the Moon (loss of signal)
Mid–late afternoon (around 3:00–4:00pm): Reappears from the far side and communication returns
