There’s an awful lot that could be said about what’s ’wrong’ in this photo of Miyagi Chojun and Miyazato Eiichi………the founder and one of his top students.

However, wouldn’t it be great on the internet if we learnt to look for what’s right, or something that might inspire us to get better rather than leaning back on what we think we know without context from a snapshot in time?

I’d like to draw attention to Miyagi’s left wrist articulation. A full on 90 degree flex with extended fingers, forearm parallel to the ground. The amount of mobility and forearm strength required for this is actually very impressive and a gold standard many (myself included) cannot match.

Know what else is great? The smile on Miyagi’s face. A good reminder that training is also supposed to be fun and that a few people could do with taking a day off from being the baddest dude on the internet.

Congratulations to the two young ladies (in front of Sensei Chris) from our dojo who successfully completed their Shodan grading at the weekend. They have achieved this milestone despite enormous individual personal challenges that have had to be met and overcome. They are representatives of the indomitable spirit of karate.
