Congratulations to our colleague, Dr. Woramat Malasart, currently a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and affiliated with Otani University, Kyoto.

He has recently published an article titled "From Manuscript Illustrations to Mural Paintings: The Contemplation of Impurity (Asubha) and Reflections on Religious and Cultural Developments in 19th-Century Thailand" in the International Journal of Buddhist Thought and Culture, Vol. 36, No. 1.

This article examines the ten illustrations of asubhakammaṭṭhāna in the Manual of Calm and Insight Meditations. This study explores how Buddhist meditation practices, together with the cultural orientations embedded in the material, were circulated, contextualized, developed, and transmitted during the nineteenth century.

The findings contribute to a broader understanding of the dissemination and development of Southeast Asian kammaṭṭhāna (meditation) traditions in the premodern period, particularly before the twentieth century. By examining textual corpora and artistic elements (such as mural paintings) that coexist with or predate the ten illustrations, the article identifies the textual sources on which the compiler drew in composing the manuscript, with particular attention to their conceptual frameworks, metaphorical structures, and pedagogical strategies.

บทความนี้ศึกษาภาพประกอบอสุภกัมมัฏฐานทั้งสิบภาพใน หนังสือพระสมถวิปัสสนากัมมัฏฐานแบบโบราณสมัยกรุงธนบุรี โดยมุ่งสำรวจว่าการปฏิบัติสมาธิในพระพุทธศาสนา ตลอดจนแนวคิดและบริบททางวัฒนธรรมที่แฝงอยู่ในต้นฉบับดังกล่าว ได้รับการเผยแพร่ ปรับให้สอดคล้องกับบริบท พัฒนา และถ่ายทอดอย่างไรในช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 ผลการศึกษานี้ช่วยเสริมสร้างความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับการเผยแพร่และพัฒนาการของคัมภีร์และแนวปฏิบัติสายกัมมัฏฐานในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ในยุคก่อนสมัยใหม่ โดยเฉพาะก่อนคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20

การศึกษาครั้งนี้อาศัยการวิเคราะห์ทั้งคัมภีร์และหลักฐานทางศิลปกรรม (เช่น จิตรกรรมฝาผนัง) ที่ปรากฏควบคู่กับหรือมีอายุเก่ากว่าภาพประกอบทั้งสิบ เพื่อสืบค้นแหล่งข้อมูลทางคัมภีร์ที่ผู้เรียบเรียงใช้ในการจัดทำต้นฉบับ โดยให้ความสำคัญเป็นพิเศษกับกรอบแนวคิด โครงสร้างเชิงอุปมา และกลวิธีด้านการสอนที่สะท้อนอยู่ในแหล่งข้อมูลเหล่านั้น

DIRI and AIIT Sign MoU to Support the Dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian Project

On 7 July 2026, the Dhammachai International Research Institute (DIRI), New Zealand, and The Ancient India and Iran Trust (AIIT), United Kingdom, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the Dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian Project, an international academic project dedicated to Buddhist Sogdian manuscripts and the transmission of Buddhism along the ancient Silk Road.

The signing took place on the occasion of the fourth-year commemorative merit-making ceremony dedicated to Phra Suthamyanavidesa, Vi. (Sutham Sudhammo), the first Executive Chairman of DIRI, whose vision and contributions helped lay the foundations for DIRI’s international Buddhist research mission.

In support of energy conservation, reduced international travel, and environmental responsibility, the signing was conducted remotely. The Most Ven. Phramaha Sutham Suratano, Pāli IX, PhD, President of DIRI, signed the MoU from Thailand. On behalf of AIIT, the MoU was signed at its office in Cambridge, United Kingdom, by Professor Almut Hintze, Chair of AIIT. Professor Nicholas Sims-Williams, Trustee of AIIT and a leading scholar of Sogdian language and manuscripts, witnessed the signing.

AIIT is a respected specialist library and research centre in Cambridge, dedicated to the study of the languages, cultures, archaeology, and history of India, Iran, and Central Asia. Its strong academic foundation in Indo-Iranian and Central Asian studies makes AIIT an especially important partner for this project.

The Dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian Project brings together leading international scholars, including Professor Imre Galambos, Professor Nicholas Sims-Williams, and Professor Yutaka Yoshida. The project aims to produce a trilingual scholarly dictionary in Sogdian, Chinese, and English, serving as a long-term reference work for Buddhist Studies, Chinese Studies, Iranian Studies, Sogdian Studies, and Silk Road history.

The dictionary is planned as an academic work of approximately 600 pages, to be published in hardback, e-book, and Gold Open Access formats through Reichert Verlag, Wiesbaden, Germany.

This collaboration marks another important step in DIRI’s mission to support Buddhist research through primary manuscripts, ancient documents, and classical languages, while strengthening its international academic network.

DIRI expresses its sincere gratitude to The Ancient India and Iran Trust, Professor Almut Hintze, Professor Nicholas Sims-Williams, and all those involved in this important academic collaboration.

DIRI และ AIIT ลงนาม MoU สนับสนุนโครงการจัดทำพจนานุกรมพุทธศาสนาภาษาซอกเดียน

เมื่อวันที่ 7 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2569 / ค.ศ. 2026 สถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย หรือ ดีรี่ (Dhammachai International Research Institute: DIRI) แห่งประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ และ The Ancient India and Iran Trust (AIIT) สหราชอาณาจักร ได้ลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MoU) เพื่อสนับสนุนโครงการ Dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian Project หรือโครงการจัดทำพจนานุกรมพุทธศาสนาภาษาซอกเดียน ซึ่งเป็นโครงการวิชาการนานาชาติด้านคัมภีร์พุทธศาสนาภาษาซอกเดียน และการถ่ายทอดพระพุทธศาสนาบนเส้นทางสายไหมในสมัยโบราณ

การลงนามครั้งนี้จัดขึ้นในวาระอันเป็นมงคลแห่งการบำเพ็ญกุศลทักษิณานุปทานครบรอบ 4 ปี แด่พระสุธรรมญาณวิเทศ วิ. (สุธรรม สุธมฺโม) อดีตประธานกรรมการบริหารท่านแรกของสถาบันดีรี่ ผู้มีคุณูปการสำคัญต่อการวางรากฐานของสถาบัน และการส่งเสริมงานวิจัยทางพระพุทธศาสนาในระดับนานาชาติ

เพื่อสนับสนุนนโยบายประหยัดพลังงาน ลดการเดินทางระหว่างประเทศที่ไม่จำเป็น และลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม การลงนามครั้งนี้จึงจัดขึ้นในรูปแบบทางไกล โดยพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ป.ธ. 9, ดร. ประธานอำนวยการสถาบันดีรี่ ลงนามจากประเทศไทย ส่วนฝ่าย AIIT ลงนาม ณ สำนักงาน เมืองเคมบริดจ์ สหราชอาณาจักร โดยศาสตราจารย์ Almut Hintze ประธานของ AIIT พร้อมด้วยศาสตราจารย์ Nicholas Sims-Williams กรรมการบริหาร AIIT และนักวิชาการชั้นนำด้านภาษาและเอกสารซอกเดียน ร่วมเป็นสักขีพยาน

AIIT เป็นสถาบันวิชาการและห้องสมุดเฉพาะทางที่มีชื่อเสียงในเมืองเคมบริดจ์ โดยมุ่งสนับสนุนการศึกษาวิจัยด้านภาษา วัฒนธรรม โบราณคดี และประวัติศาสตร์ของอินเดีย อิหร่าน และเอเชียกลาง ความเชี่ยวชาญของ AIIT ด้านอินโด-อิหร่านศึกษาและเอเชียกลางศึกษาจึงมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งต่อโครงการพจนานุกรมพุทธศาสนาภาษาซอกเดียนนี้

โครงการ Dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian Project มีคณะทำงานประกอบด้วยนักวิชาการชั้นนำระดับโลก ได้แก่ ศาสตราจารย์ Imre Galambos ศาสตราจารย์ Nicholas Sims-Williams และศาสตราจารย์ Yutaka Yoshida โดยมีเป้าหมายในการจัดทำพจนานุกรมเชิงวิชาการ 3 ภาษา ได้แก่ ภาษาซอกเดียน ภาษาจีน และภาษาอังกฤษ เพื่อเป็นผลงานอ้างอิงระยะยาวสำหรับวงการพุทธศาสนศึกษา จีนศึกษา อิหร่านศึกษา ซอกเดียนศึกษา และประวัติศาสตร์เส้นทางสายไหม

พจนานุกรมฉบับนี้มีกำหนดจัดทำเป็นผลงานวิชาการขนาดประมาณ 600 หน้า โดยมีแผนตีพิมพ์ในรูปแบบหนังสือปกแข็ง e-book และ Gold Open Access กับ Reichert Verlag เมือง Wiesbaden ประเทศเยอรมนี

ความร่วมมือครั้งนี้นับเป็นอีกก้าวสำคัญของสถาบันดีรี่ในการสนับสนุนการศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาจากหลักฐานต้นฉบับ เอกสารโบราณ และภาษาโบราณ พร้อมทั้งขยายเครือข่ายความร่วมมือทางวิชาการในระดับนานาชาติ

DIRI: นำเสนอ ผลงานวิจัย ของ พระวีรชัย เตชฺงกุโร,ดร. จาก เนื้อหาบางส่วน ในคัมภีร์ "มหาวัสตุอวตาน" ที่มีอายุของเนื้อหา ประมาณ พ.ศ.701-800 อักษร เทวนาครี ภาษาสันสกฤต ความว่า :เมื่อได้ยินว่าธรรมกายแห่งบุรุษนั้นบังเกิดขึ้น เมื่อบุรุษนั้นเข้าถึงธรรมกาย สนิทกุมารดำริว่าเราจะขับเพลงสรรเสริญพระตถาคตพระองค์นั้น:

DIRI: ถวายความรู้ แก่ พระมหาเปรียญธรรมตั้งแต่ เปรียญ 3-9 ประโยค ในกลุ่มสาระวิชา "บันไดสู่นักวิจัย" หัวข้อ ประติมานวิทยา (Iconography)ซึ่งเป็น สาขาหนึ่งของประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์ที่ศึกษาประวัติ การบรรยาย และการตีความหมายของเนื้อหาในงานศิลปะ โดยมุ่งเน้นการถอดรหัสสัญลักษณ์ ท่าทาง เครื่องทรง และเทวดาประจำทิศ เพื่อทำความเข้าใจบริบททางศาสนา สังคม และคติความเชื่อที่ซ่อนอยู่ในงานชิ้นนั้น ๆ เป็นต้น เพื่อให้เข้าใจลึกซึ้งขึ้นในการมองภาพหรือภาพสลักต่างๆในมุมที่แตกต่างออกไปจากที่เพียงมองแบบผิวเผิน โดย ดร.กิจชัย เอื้อเกษม

การทำสมาธิ ไม่ได้ส่งผลแค่กับ “จิตใจ” เท่านั้น แต่ยังอาจส่งผลลึกไปถึง “สมอง” ด้วย

มีงานวิจัยพบว่า การทำสมาธิแบบจดจ่อ (Focused Attention Meditation) ช่วยกระตุ้นระบบกำจัดของเสียในสมอง ให้ทำงานในลักษณะใกล้เคียงกับช่วงหลับลึก ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาสำคัญที่สมองได้ซ่อมแซม ฟื้นฟู และกำจัดของเสียที่สะสมอยู่

นั่นหมายความว่า การนั่งสมาธิ ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงการพักใจ แต่อาจเป็นอีกหนึ่งวิธีที่ช่วยดูแลสมองให้สดชื่น อ่อนเยาว์ และอาจมีส่วนช่วยลดความเสี่ยงของภาวะสมองเสื่อมในอนาคตได้ด้วย
