In 1943 Wakari Kindergarten opened in Presbyterian Hall. It moved to its own building in Lynn St in 1956. At Wakari Kindergarten we encourage children to learn, play and explore. We believe Kindergarten is about developing and learning whilst having fun. Relationships are the key to all learning, and we develop and maintain open relationships with all children, their parents and families. We offer school day 8.30-2.30 and morning sessions 8.30-12.30 every day of the week. Wakari Kindergarten: A great place to learn - Where learning is fun!

Our Kindergarten Cafe was the place to be today! With the sunshine out today, our tamariki enjoyed exploring imaginative play in the playground at the Kindergarten Cafe. From taking orders and serving up delicious treats to their friends, they explored creativity, communication, and teamwork through their play. It was wonderful to see their confidence, friendships, and imaginations flourish in the fresh spring air!

This week our tamariki enjoyed making some delicious Weet-Bix Slice together!

They got fully involved in each step of the process, from crushing the Weet-Bix and counting and measuring ingredients to mixing everything together and helping prepare it for baking. Along the way, they practised turn-taking and following instructions.

Baking experiences like these provide wonderful opportunities for hands-on learning while encouraging independence, cooperation, and problem-solving. Of course, the best part was taste testing - and sharing and enjoying the finished slice together! YUM!

Our tamariki have been making the most of these wintery, frosty mornings ❄️
They’ve been out in the playground noticing frosty surfaces, crunchy grass and hunting down pieces of ice - touching, exploring, and talking about what they see and feel. We love getting outside into our playground every day - encouraging hands-on learning and sparking curiosity.

As we look forward to Matariki, we celebrated this week with a family tea night. It was wonderful to come together for a special evening of community, fairy lights, lanterns and a starry winter discovery. 🌟 Thank you to all the tamariki and whānau who joined us for food, friendship and some mid-winter fun! ✨❄️⭐️

Today we had a visit from Kath Bee who ran a fun-filled music session. The tamariki really enjoyed the lively songs, instruments, movement and especially, the bubbles! It was wonderful to see the tamariki so engaged as they explored rhythm, language and creativity together. We're looking forward to getting Kath's book of Dragons Under My Bed - check out her music on Spotify!

Our tamariki have been enjoying exploring the world of New Zealand’s native birds through playing, watching, feeding and observing them in our environment. These experiences inspired beautiful artwork as tamariki experimented with colour, line and form to represent the birds they noticed and connected with. The highlight was seeing their artwork proudly displayed on the wall for us all to enjoy! 🐦‍⬛🎨🖼️
