From University Research to Real-World Impact
Many evidence-based programmes begin with great research. Far fewer make the journey into everyday practice.
ENGAGE is one of those success stories.
Developed by Professor Dione Healey at the University of Otago, ENGAGE was created to help young children develop self-regulation through purposeful play. Following promising research, the challenge became ensuring the programme could be delivered consistently, sustainably and at scale.
This is where Otago Innovation played an important role.
As the University of Otago's technology transfer office, Otago Innovation helped transform ENGAGE from an academic research programme into a real-world solution. Through funding, commercialisation expertise, intellectual property protection and strategic partnerships, they supported the pathway from research to implementation.
ENGAGE has continued to evolve through collaboration with researchers, students, research assistants and practitioners. A key partner in adapting ENGAGE for early childhood education has been the Methodist Mission Southern, whose team worked closely with Professor Healey to develop and implement the programme within ECE settings.
Today, ENGAGE is being rolled out to hundreds of early childhood services across New Zealand as part of a Government-funded initiative, helping more children develop the self-regulation skills that underpin learning, relationships and lifelong wellbeing.
It's a powerful example of what can happen when world-class research, commercialisation expertise and community partnerships work together to create lasting impact.
