It was a delight to hear from PhD candidate, Tessa Smith, present her work on Tuesday. The topic was MATINEE IDYLLS: REVISITING AOTEAROA’S HISTORY OF RURAL CINEMA IN THE AGE OF STREAMING. Tessa is researching how cinema works in terms of civic life in Aotearoa - through the lived experience of film-goers and the cultural politics of the Ngā Taonga archive. She is supervised by Erica Newman (Te Tumu) , Yuki Watanabe and Rosie Overell.

It is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! Did you know that we teach a number of films in Te Reo in our INDIGENOUS MEDIA (MFCO 318) paper led by Dr Yuki Watanabe?
Alongside Ngāti and Waru we also teach the recent short Kāinga, directed by Michelle Ang and includes Te Reo alongside Asian languages.

Delighted to officially launch our 25 Years of Media, Film & Communication Division of Humanities, University of Otago last Tuesday with pop up panel ‘scrolling back’ over the crises, conceptual debates and moments which have characterised our field since 2001. Consider, this week, 25 years ago the 9/11 attacks presented a media spectacle so remarkable it is not an exaggeration to say that the mediascape irrevocably shifted. Also in this time span, we have seen the move from ‘legacy’ to so-called smart and social media, the marketisation of previously public communications channels and intensified nationalisms.
Our panelists were Michael Daubs Yuki Watanabe and Brett Nicholls (who was teaching at otago the day that 9/11 occurred).
We were grateful for our attendees from across the University and alumni.
Watch this space for our next pop up panel, where Rosie Overell and Olivier Jutel will ponder 💭what might come in the next 25 years.
