Te Tumu is rapidly gaining an international reputation as one of the best places in New Zealand to learn about Māori, Pacific and Indigenous languages, cultures and societies. Our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary staff, students, teaching and research is reflected in our name Te Tumu, a pan-Polynesian term which is often used in Māori in the phrase te tumu herenga waka – the post for tying up canoes. We liken ourselves as a foundation which staff, students and guests can anchor themselves to for the duration of their stay at the University of Otago. We hope that you, like many others who have also done, choose Te Tumu as a place to become critically aware of the world around you and gain the skills to actively participate in that world to change it for the betterment of all Māori, Pacific and Indigenous peoples.

This Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, we’re celebrating the power of bringing te reo home and the role whānau play in nurturing language, identity and connection across generations.

Paulette Tamati-Elliffe and Kiringāua Cassidy bring a unique intergenerational perspective to Māori language revitalisation. As mother and son, they represent both the foundations and future of the Kotahi Mano Kāika movement, which has helped restore te reo Māori to thousands of Ngāi Tahu homes. Together, Paulette and Kiringāua will share their experiences of raising, living, and thriving through te reo Māori, demonstrating the power of language transmission within whānau and the impact it can have across generations.
