A new Health Equity Midwifery Research Award sponsored by the Otago Polytechnic School of Midwifery was presented at the 12th biennial Joan Donley Midwifery Research Forum held recently in Dunedin.

Dr Karen Wakelin, Principal lecturer and Head of School of Midwifery, presented the inaugural award to Kaniwa Kupenga-Tamarama (Ngāti Maui | Ngāti Porou | Ngāti Apakura | Ngāti Hikairoa).

Congratulations to our Learning and Teaching Development, Te Ama Ako - Otago Polytechnic, who recently won the award for Best Online Learning Project at the New Zealand Association for Training and Development (NZATD) Awards 🙌🏆

It recognised the online delivery of the Post Graduate Certificate in Learning Design (Level 8) as being innovative, engaging, and an example of excellent online learning 👏

Danny Fridberg and Amy Benians accepted the trophy at the NZATD Awards 2026 in Auckland, and say they're proud and humbled to have their work recognised nationally:

“In its four years of delivery, the programme has contributed to the development of a Learning Design community of graduates and is working towards setting up recognised professional standards for learning designers in Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Danny.

The award recognised the emphasis on Te Tiriti partnership, pastoral care, online delivery, industry engagement, and evaluation loops accompanying the programme.

Memory Karudze was in her early 20s when she lost her mother, and this life-changing experience later inspired her Nursing study 💙

“I didn’t grow up wanting to be a nurse. But looking back, I felt that my mother’s care was negligent and should have been much better. That made me want to be there for others and make sure they are well looked after.”

Memory started with our Health Bridging programmes, passing all her papers with A+ and A grades, before entering our Bachelor of Nursing.

“I had only been in New Zealand about three years at that time, so I still had some fear of being different. But the culture at OP is so inclusive. You don’t have to change who you are – the staff support you the way you are, and there are lots of pathways to achieve what you want.” 🙌

Big congratulations to Veterinary Nursing grad and peer tutor Leah Foster, who has won third place in the RCVS Knowledge Veterinary Evidence Student Awards 2025 👏🐾

Reflecting on this achievement, Head of Otago Polytechnic School of Animal Health and Veterinary Nursing Jen Evans says: “We had the privilege of seeing Leah develop her skills and confidence during her studies with us, so it's wonderful to see her recognised through this international award. We are very proud of Leah and congratulate her on this well-deserved achievement!”

Students from the UK, India, Australia and New Zealand have been announced as the winners of the Veterinary Evidence Student Awards.

Justine Cole from the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) won first place, Athulya Prakash from Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Official was awarded second place, and the joint third winners were Jacqueline Chappell from the University of Sydney and Leah Foster from Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand.

The winning papers covered a variety of topics and species, including antiparasitic medication, risk scoring and animal behaviour in companion animals and environmental sustainability in dairy cattle.

Veterinary Evidence editor-in-chief Peter Cockcroft said: “It’s wonderful to see veterinary students from across the world making their first contributions to evidence-based veterinary medicine. I hope that their experience of writing a Knowledge Summary has inspired them to continue doing so throughout their career. ”
