Woohoo! Welcome to the first day of Spring! 🌸☀️

It’s been one harsh, wet winter here, so we’re very excited to welcome warmer weather and longer days!

We’re looking forward to bringing back our river and beach treks, pony baths, and, of course, the never-ending job of dealing with moulting horses!

I know our horses will all enjoy being naked again and these are going to be your best friends for the next while 😂

I always told Aachen that one day I’d buy a place of my own where he could eventually retire. It was one of those dreams I had in my head for years, and somehow it actually became a reality.

So, days like yesterday feel pretty special. Being able to jump on him and head out for a nice, slow trek around the block, with Bowie, John and Lucia alongside us, on what felt like the most gorgeous spring afternoon.

Aachen is 30 now (his actual birthday is December 26th, although his official horse birthday is August 1st), but he still gets lightly ridden a few times a week. And honestly, I think this is a big part of what has kept him going. He absolutely LOVES hacking. Trotting along the grass verges, stopping for a snack while John and co caught up.

I’m hoping we’ll continue having little hacks like this for as long as he enjoys them. And when the day eventually comes for him to properly retire, he is certainly going to be one very pampered old man, with plenty of love from us and all of our students who adore him!

Horses really are miracle workers. I’d been feeling a bit down and exhausted, and like I hadn’t properly left the house in days. But a ride, some fresh air and time with my best old mate, and I came home feeling like myself again ❤️

We are urgently looking for more hay suppliers in Hawke’s Bay! 🌾

Our current wonderful hay supplier is nearly out, so we’re on the hunt for someone who can help keep our 9 horses well stocked.

You’ll have a very good and regular buyer in us as we’re currently spending around $26,000 a year on hay alone! Yep that’s right, over $500 per week 🥲

Saddle Fitting Day 🐴

All nine of our horses had their saddles rechecked and fitted by Maddox Equestrian this morning! It was great to have them out and properly assess each horse and see what adjustments were needed to make sure their saddles are as comfortable and well-fitted as possible.

Did you know? Saddles should ideally be checked regularly, generally around every 6 months, as horses can change shape quite a bit throughout the year. Changes in fitness, muscle development, weight, age and workload can all affect how a saddle fits. We last had our lot checked in November so they were definitely due and many had changed even since then!

Sometimes a saddle may simply need a small adjustment, such as changing the gullet or adding, removing or adjusting flocking.

A well-fitted saddle is so important for our horses’ comfort, movement and wellbeing. Think of it like wearing a pair of jeans or a bra that doesn’t fit properly… you definitely know about it!

So, we’re sure all of our horses will be feeling much more comfortable after their fitting today. We take their comfort seriously and want to make sure they’re happy and comfortable while they’re working with our riders!

Welcome Smudge 🐴

Smudge has come on trial to see if he’s suited to and enjoys riding school life, and if all goes well, we’ll be lucky to lease him.

He’s a 14.3hh Stationbred gelding in his early twenties, although he definitely doesn’t act his age! Smudgey has previously enjoyed both jumping and hacking in his old home, so we’re looking forward to seeing how he settles in and goes over the next few weeks.

Fingers crossed he loves his new job and gets to join the family permanently if his trial works out. Thank you Zoe for entrusting us with your beautiful ginger 🧡
