The existence of biological s*x is no constraint on human diversity – Paul Griffiths | Aeon Essays 08/10/2020

"There’s no need to reject how biologists define the s*xes to defend the view that trans women are women. When we look across the diversity of life, s*x takes stranger forms than anyone has dreamt of for humans. The biological definition of s*x takes all this in its stride. It does so despite the fact that there are no more than two biological s*xes in any species you’re likely to have heard of. To many people, that might seem to have ‘conservative’ implications, or to fly in the face of the diversity we see in actual human beings. I will make clear why it does not."

The existence of biological s*x is no constraint on human diversity – Paul Griffiths | Aeon Essays Yes, there are just two biological s*xes. No, this doesn’t mean every living thing is either one or the other

Hunter-Gatherers and Human Evolution: New light on old debates - Richard B. Lee 08/09/2020

"A leading specialist on hunter-gatherers exposes Steven Pinker’s poorly-researched claims that humans have always been war-like.

Richard Lee also summarises decades of research on hunter-gatherers showing how they emphasise food-sharing, gender equality and cooperative childcare. Lee concludes that it was this sort of less aggressive and more cooperative social environment in our evolutionary past that permitted the long childhoods required for human brain growth."

The anarchist: How David Graeber became the left's most influential thinker 05/09/2020

One of the most influential anthropologists who reached audiences beyond academia. We are mourning his untimely passing.

The anarchist: How David Graeber became the left's most influential thinker Every once in a while, a thinker revolutionises the way we see the world and helps us reimagine the things we once took for granted. David Graeber, the anthropologist and bestselling author, whose unexpected death on 2 September at the age of 59 has shocked the international left, was such a rare cu...
