"There’s no need to reject how biologists define the s*xes to defend the view that trans women are women. When we look across the diversity of life, s*x takes stranger forms than anyone has dreamt of for humans. The biological definition of s*x takes all this in its stride. It does so despite the fact that there are no more than two biological s*xes in any species you’re likely to have heard of. To many people, that might seem to have ‘conservative’ implications, or to fly in the face of the diversity we see in actual human beings. I will make clear why it does not."

Richard Lee also summarises decades of research on hunter-gatherers showing how they emphasise food-sharing, gender equality and cooperative childcare. Lee concludes that it was this sort of less aggressive and more cooperative social environment in our evolutionary past that permitted the long childhoods required for human brain growth."

One of the most influential anthropologists who reached audiences beyond academia. We are mourning his untimely passing.
