Well done Stephen. Good luck at ANAM

Meet the musician:
Stephen Mosa’ati is a New Zealand born Tongan trumpeter who originally began on cornet at the Salvation Army in 2007. It wasn’t until he started high school in 2016 at Burnside High School that he began playing the trumpet, under the tuition of Thomas Eves.

Stephen has recently completed his Bachelor of Music in 2023 at the Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music (NZSM), where he learnt from Mark Carter.

Merry Christmas and a happy holiday.

Congratulations to Magna Voce for their fantastic Tui award - the top grade - at their first appearance at the Big Sing's South Island Cadenza!

So great to have ex-BHS muso Ben back in town. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, don’t delay so you get to hear this amazing player.

Ōtautahi Christchurch-born violinist Benjamin Morrison is a first violin member of the Vienna Philharmonic; and is the only New Zealander ever to win a seat with this prestigious orchestra.

He began his studies with Professor Stephen Larsen, before moving to Wellington to study with NZSO’s Concertmaster, Vesa Matti-Leppänen.

In 2007, Morrison moved to Austria to continue his studies in violin performance and chamber music. Since 2014, he is a member of the Vienna State Opera, and since 2017, a member of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Morrison performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral member on all continents.

He returns to Ōtautahi next Saturday to dazzle hometown audiences with Dvořák’s virtuosic Violin Concerto in Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: White Horses.

Do not miss this incredible show of musicianship.

Congratulations to our Burnside choirs, who over the last two weeks have had successful performances at both the Choral Showcase at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, and the Big Sing Regionals at the Christchurch Town Hall.

It was another successful Big Sing competition with awards for all 3 competing choirs:
Best Student Accompanist for Aurora Voices' pianist, Aaron Zheng

Best Student Conductor to Magna Voce's Dylan Jonkers
Best Performance of a New Zealand Work to Bel Canto for "Mihi" by David Hamilton.

Many thanks and congratulations to the musical directors, Emma Summers (Aurora Voices), Naomi Hnat (Bel Canto), and Charlotte Ensor (Magna Voce and Junior Performance Choir). Also to Lois Johnston, our Vocal and Choral Co-ordinator.

This was also our first opportunity to debut the new Bel Canto uniforms! Many thanks to Charlotte Ensor and Helen Renaud for designing and organising these, along with the seamstresses at Sisters3 for their excellent craftsmanship of the jumpsuits.
