Character portrait posters!

Pīwakawaka classes developing their character design skills and using the abstract art skills they learned last week to enhance the portraits.

We used POSCA pen, paint and fineliners. We also learned about sketching without erasing and “feeling” your way through the sketch to achieve correct proportions.

We also discussed how layering and differing line weights can add more professionalism to your work and also more dimension and interest.

Layering the paint over the top of a final character was also felt as “wrong” by some of the class but as you can see transformed the drawings entirely. Abstract art may look a bit random but is always generally meticulously placed and is definitely not as easy as you think let alone the ideation and drawing behind a character - well done Pīwakawaka these look great!

Scanography and Collage class a few weeks ago with the Teenagers!

Students learned about Scanography (printmaking method) in poster design. We looked into the Punk movement and activism to learn how scanography helped people deliver important messages pre cell phones.

Our teenagers really loved these classes, some have continued to do this in their spare time or chosen to work it into their NCEA portfolios. There was an element of “instant result” which for kids these days, can be important to hold engagement but still gave the students a chance to be meticulous. It was also great for learning about composition and focal points.

Little Fale [Fah- leh] is a semi private tiny studio located in Ōtautahi, New Brighton!

We offer after school creative classes for tamariki and teenagers aged 5-18. Our classes have a maximum of 6 - 7 students. We are not a ‘traditional’ art class. We use a range of mediums over the course of a term and we like to encourage a focus on how the process of art making makes us feel rather than focussing too much on the final outcome - perfect for any level of artist.

We think there is a need for an after school service that can help tamariki and teenagers feel relaxed in a welcoming and encouraging space which feels like their ‘creative home’ away from home.

New enrolments for 2024 open on the 22nd of December.

**’Fale’means house in the Samoan language.

Pīwakawaka classes!
(Ages 13-18)

These collages are part of some research for a final/larger piece where we are mashing up 2x artist models.

These pieces were created to work on composition, colour and also working on “less is more” when it comes to spray painting.

These two by Kiwa and Zara came together incredibly well ❤️

With Georgia back from Maternity leave, we are back into updating our instagram!! 🤣😅

A mix of our Rua & Toru student work (ages 5-12 and is one lessons worth of work!) awesome lessons this week and really good to be back ❤️ following an artist model - Russ Mills (byroglyphix) who is a mixed media and digital artist. First image is a Proboscis Monkey by Leif who is in our Toru group on Tuesdays.

Students chose their preferred “character” and have used mixed media. They have learned techniques with spray paint, jackson po***ck style paint throwing and also learning how to paint gesturally and use unmixed paint to your advantage by making texture and depth like Van Gogh. Amazing how you can fit 3 different art techniques into one lesson/artwork!! They have also learned about composition depth and negative space with these pieces.

A very exciting start to the year for two of our students who we helped with their NCEA Art portfolio’s. Both girls worked super hard on these and spent many hours in the studio finishing these off. Both received Merits for their hard work. Super proud of you both ❤️

Isla’s work (pictured first) was based on Celtic art and culture. Her work was mostly block prints, etching and also embossing. Isla is at Aotawhiti school and travels all the way from the other side of town to do art with us.

lyth Jaz created a very kiwiana board inspired by Tramping and the outdoors. Hers was painting based and featured a lot of painted collage. As her board was super detailed, We helped her out with some painting techniques on work she was getting behind in at school. Jaz is at Marian College.

Jaz and Isla made use of Saturday studio time to do extra work on these folios. We are happy to offer supplies, extra help with NCEA work and provide a nice space for our teenage students to make new friends and complete their folios without having to go back into school or make a big mess at home.

Super proud of the hard work they put in. Well done girls, well deserved ❤️

For Term 1, Saturdays are not available as Georgia is on Maternity leave. We will be looking to add these on again in Term 2.

More abstract fun! 🤩

Photos from Little Fale's post 08/11/2022

Charlie’s Practise piece and final piece 🤩 plus some other abstract expressionism pieces moving on from last weeks intro to abstract painting! Abstract is a huge hit with our students as it takes the pressure of failure away from being artistic! 🧚🏽‍♀️

One of our art dads has sneakily joined in his Daughter’s class to paint this picture of Okains Bay as a Christmas gift. Turned out pretty damn good! Loving the accidental fish eye perspective that’s going on, gives it lots of character! Could even be Rita Angus inspired 🤩

I know there are a lot of Adults keen on some sessions! Hold tight, I may dot some into the Jan holidays!

Recent punk spiderman painting made by Maya Pradhan one of our very talented students!! Swipe to see her first painting compared to where she is at now.

Only 13 years old, her improvement comes down to her very hard work and many hours of it. As artists our hard work is often under valued as people assume that our abilities are down to natural ability. The truth is that we all draw before we write and some of us continue to draw often which is why people become artists. Maya draws and paints every single day.

This improvement is 100% because she worked hard for it and it just happens that she loves the work so it is easy for her to keep at it. Well done Maya, so proud of you and how far you have come with not only your art but also your confidence 🥰
