MEETINGS 2026 – A LESSON IN STRESS, SELF-AWARENESS AND PLANNING

This week at Meetings 2026 was an interesting reminder of how important planning, focus, and self-awareness are in business and life.

The first day was a famil and fairly relaxed, with an evening event that allowed time to connect with people and settle into the week.

Day two was a completely different story. It was back-to-back appointments all day – around 25 meetings. By the time I got back to my hotel room, I was overwhelmed. What really struck me was that the state of my hotel room reflected exactly how I was feeling internally – chaotic, tired, and overloaded.

That was my wake-up call.

I realised that the overwhelm was probably intensified by the fact that I hadn't slept well for a couple of nights. Looking back, I also hadn't paced myself properly throughout the day. I was so focused on getting from one appointment to the next that I didn't make time for proper food breaks, hydration, or even regular toilet stops. It was a reminder that when we're busy, our basic needs are often the first things we neglect, yet they're critical to performing at our best.

I took stock, tidied up my environment, got some rest, and reset.

My biggest "aha" moment was this:

When we are stressed and overwhelmed, we often think we're hiding it. We're not.

It shows up in our behaviour, our energy, our decision-making, our communication, and even in the spaces around us.

As business owners, leaders, and sales professionals, people are constantly reading how we show up. If we're overwhelmed, others can often see it before we do.

The key for me was to slow down, refocus, and stick to the plan.

This experience reinforced the importance of having strategies in place to manage pressure before it becomes overwhelming.

My top tips for dealing with stress and overwhelm:

✅ Stay focused on your priorities
✅ Have a clear plan and strategy
✅ Get enough rest and recovery time
✅ Stay hydrated throughout the day
✅ Eat properly and fuel your body for performance
✅ Pace yourself and schedule breaks
✅ Make time for basic needs, including food, water, and toilet stops
✅ Recognise the warning signs early
✅ Take stock of how you're showing up
✅ Have practical ways to manage stressful situations
✅ Stick to the plan, even when things get busy

Success isn't about avoiding stress. It's about recognising it, managing it, and continuing to show up professionally.

Sometimes the simplest things—sleep, hydration, nutrition, and taking a few minutes to reset—can make the biggest difference to how we perform and how we show up for others.

What are your best strategies for dealing with stress and overwhelm when business gets busy?

Sales Leaders: Is Your Time Management Helping or Hurting Your Success?

As a Sales Leader, time management and planning are crucial to your success and the success of your team.

With the number of responsibilities you face every day, it's easy to become reactive instead of proactive. The most successful sales leaders plan their days, weeks, and months with purpose and clarity.

Ask yourself:

✅ What is urgent and important?
✅ What is important but not urgent?
✅ What can be delegated?
✅ What activities will help achieve targets, budgets, commissions, and bonuses?

Effective planning allows you to focus on the activities that truly move the needle:

• Growing market share
• Building stronger client relationships
• Maintaining a structured call cycle
• Coaching and training team members
• Managing KPI performance
• Producing accurate reports
• Following up quotes and opportunities
• Building a healthy sales pipeline
• Monitoring competitor activity
• Reporting industry changes to senior management

Great sales leadership isn't about being busy—it's about being productive and focused on the right activities.

When your diary is organised, your priorities are clear, and your plan is structured, you keep your head in the game and create the momentum needed for both individual and team success.

Remember: Planning and diary management are not administrative tasks—they are leadership disciplines.

If you need help developing effective planning systems, time management strategies, or sales leadership processes for yourself or your team, I'd love to help.

Sales Leadership – The Most Important Role in the Business

As a Sales Leader, your role is one of the most important in the entire company.

If you and your team are not generating sales, winning new business, opening new markets, increasing profitability, maintaining strong relationships with clients and suppliers, and delivering exceptional customer service, the business will struggle to grow.

Your responsibility extends far beyond simply managing a sales team. You are responsible for creating an environment where success becomes the expected outcome.

Successful Sales Leaders:

✅ Drive revenue growth and profitability

✅ Develop and execute clear sales strategies

✅ Build and maintain strong client relationships

✅ Protect and enhance the company's reputation

✅ Recruit, coach, and develop high-performing team members

✅ Ensure product and industry knowledge remains current

✅ Create accountability through KPIs, targets, and activity measures

✅ Manage pipelines effectively and accurately forecast results

✅ Lead by example through professionalism and integrity

However, great sales leadership requires more than sales skills alone.

You should continually invest in your own development by:

🔹 Attending sales and leadership training

🔹 Understanding employment and HR requirements

🔹 Knowing your team's employment agreements and obligations

🔹 Providing clear expectations around the use of company vehicles, phones, computers, and other resources

🔹 Developing strong time management and planning disciplines

🔹 Delivering regular coaching, feedback, and performance reviews

🔹 Creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement

When leaders fail to provide direction, coaching, systems, and support, teams become confused, disengaged, and inconsistent. When leaders provide clarity, structure, training, and encouragement, teams become productive, motivated, and successful.

Your reputation as a leader is built on the performance of your team.

Invest in yourself, develop your people, create clear strategies, manage your pipeline, and focus on delivering value to your clients every day.

When your team succeeds, the business succeeds.

And when the business succeeds, targets are achieved, budgets are met, commissions are earned, bonuses are paid, and opportunities for growth multiply.

ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR DIARY OR IS YOUR DIARY MANAGING YOU? 🚦

Success in sales and business doesn't happen by accident. It happens through planning, structure, discipline, and consistent follow-up.

Ask yourself these questions:

✅ Do you plan every day in your diary?

✅ Do you time block for:
• Following up clients
• Returning calls and emails
• Cold calling and prospecting
• Client appointments
• Writing reports after each meeting
• Travel time between appointments
• Preparing for your next client meeting

✅ Do you carry all the tools you need?
• Diary
• Business cards
• Application forms
• Quote forms
• Notebook
• Pens
• Sales collateral

✅ Do you have a clear structure for every sales call?

✅ Are you completing follow-up activities and call reports after every meeting?

✅ Do you maintain an active sales pipeline?

Most importantly...

📊 Are you tracking your numbers every single day?

Do you know:
• Your call-to-sale ratio?
• How many appointments you need?
• How many proposals you need to submit?
• How much revenue you need to generate daily, weekly, and monthly?

Or are you simply flying blind and hoping for the best?

The highest-performing salespeople and business owners don't rely on luck. They build systems, processes, and structures that allow them to focus on the activities that create results.

When you have a proven system, you gain:
✔ Greater focus
✔ Better productivity
✔ Improved client relationships
✔ Increased sales
✔ More confidence
✔ Better forecasting
✔ Consistent growth

If you would like help implementing effective sales systems, diary management, pipeline management, follow-up processes, and accountability structures for yourself or your team, I would love to help.

Leadership is not screaming at your team.
It is not humiliating people in front of clients.
It is not abusing suppliers, delivery drivers, family members, gym staff, or strangers on the road.

That is not leadership.
That is insecurity, emotional instability, and false bravado disguised as authority.

Your title does not give you the right to disrespect people.

When you lose control publicly, what people actually see is:

Your inability to manage emotions
Your lack of self-awareness
Your poor communication skills
Your insecurity showing up under pressure

People may comply out of fear temporarily, but they will not trust you, respect you, or want to follow you long term.

Toxic leadership damages:

Team culture
Staff retention
Mental wellbeing
Client relationships
Business reputation
Industry credibility
Family relationships
Your own self-respect

If this behaviour sounds familiar, own it.
Take responsibility.
Get help.
Learn better ways to communicate, lead, and manage difficult situations.

Strong leaders do not degrade people.
Strong leaders build trust, psychological safety, accountability, and mutual respect.

Bullying, intimidation, narcissistic behaviour, and verbal abuse are not signs of strength.
They are signs that emotional regulation and self-leadership need work.

5 Ways to Stop Toxic Behaviour
Pause before reacting emotionally
Learn emotional regulation and self-awareness
Have difficult conversations privately and respectfully
Listen instead of dominating conversations
Take accountability and apologise when necessary
5 Ways to Treat People — and Yourself — With Respect
Speak calmly under pressure
Acknowledge people’s effort and contribution
Communicate honestly without humiliation or blame
Build relationships based on trust and consistency
Lead with empathy, boundaries, and integrity

The way you treat other people reflects the relationship you have with yourself.

Respect is not weakness.
Self-control is not weakness.
Empathy is not weakness.

That is real leadership.

The value you place on yourself is often reflected in how you communicate, present yourself, and represent your business. Whether you are speaking at a webinar, presenting to clients, posting on social media, or conducting training, people are constantly evaluating your credibility, professionalism, and trustworthiness.

There is a significant difference between being authentic and being unprofessional. Authenticity means being genuine, transparent, and relatable. It does not require excessive swearing, crude examples, or shock tactics.

When presenters rely on profanity or inappropriate case studies to gain attention, they risk:

Damaging their professional reputation.
Alienating potential clients and customers.
Undermining the value of their message.
Reducing trust and credibility.
Limiting opportunities with corporate and professional audiences.
Creating a perception that they lack substance and need shock value to engage an audience.

Professionalism is not about being stiff or robotic. It is about respecting your audience and understanding that different people have different values, experiences, and expectations.

As business owners and trainers, we should ask ourselves:

Would I speak this way in front of my best client?
Would I be comfortable if this webinar was recorded and shared publicly?
Does my language enhance my message or distract from it?
Am I building trust or eroding it?

The strongest communicators I've observed are those who can deliver powerful messages without resorting to profanity or inappropriate examples. Their expertise, preparation, stories, questions, and insights create engagement—not shock tactics.

For anyone building a personal brand or business reputation, remember:

Your reputation is built one conversation, one presentation, and one interaction at a time.

Professionalism, integrity, respect, and authenticity never go out of style. They attract the right clients, strengthen relationships, and build a brand people trust.

A simple rule is this:

If your language becomes the thing people remember instead of your message, you've probably missed the mark.
