Nga mihi-thank you to all our whanau who joined us for our Christmas party yesterday. For the families that couldn’t make it, we missed you! We all enjoyed a reka-delicious kai, face painting candy floss, and balloons. Unfortunately we had to take down the bouncy castle. We hope you all enjoyed the party as much as we did
Meri kirihimete ki a koutou-we wish you all a very Merry and safe Christmas!

At Kimihia, we know the value of sharing each of our families’ uniquely different cultures and traditions. There is so much for the whole community to gain from this kind of experience.
Diwali is one of the biggest and brightest festival on the Hindu calendar, celebrated in October and November every year( lunar calendar). We at Kimihia celebrated with a bright and colourful day of traditional dress, dancing and cooking.
It was a chance for Indian children in our centre to showcase some of their valued family traditions. In the days leading up to their celebration, all the children helped to make decorations, set up lights around the centre
On the day Mehramjit’s mum Monika one of our past student mum did Heena art for the children and teachers. there were performances by Zia Garcia and Jignasha Solanki. Rohan Chakrabarti, a prominent young leader in the Christchurch Indian community explained the significance of Diwali and its relevance to our modern lives. Some of the children came in their traditional dresses. The children were enchanted by the teachers and some of the children being dressed so beautifully.
We celebrated by lighting the clay diyas and by eating delicious rice, chickpea curry, potato curry, nan bread, poppadoms and enjoying the mango lassi (traditional yogurt drink) for lunch.
“The day had a really nice community feel to it and the music and decorations brought Diwali to life for our whānau.”

Turangawaewae - A place to stand.

We have had fun in the outdoor environment exploring what nature provides.

As we close up for Christmas we wish you and your whanau a meri kirihimete and a wonderful New Year.

Thank you so much to the community constables that stopped by to deliver some vegetables and plants for our community garden.

We hope you have kept warm and dry this weekend!

As you may have heard we have been put into a state of emergency which means for schools like Kimihia we have chosen to stay closed tomorrow to keep the roads clear and our tamariki safe at home.

Hopefully the roads start to clear up and we can be ready to come back on Tuesday!

See you all then.

Last but certainly not least, our other Events Officer, Rohan.

Kia Ora! My name is Rohan Chakrabarti. I am a final year Civil Engineering student at UC. Last year I had the privilege of collaborating with LWL through my social media based mental health campaign, ‘Real Men Do Cry: Trashing Toxic Masculinity’ in hosting a mental health fundraiser, in the form of a cocktail evening. This proved to be a roaring success, and emphasised to me the opportunities this club has created in making a significant difference in the mental health space for our UC community and within the wider Christchurch area.

There is often a great deal of stigma surrounding men and showing vulnerability through expressing emotion. Conversations surrounding the concepts of men's mental health are almost taboo in many parts of society. I hope this club continues to carry on the work that has been initiated in driving and encouraging these conversations within our community. This year, with the support of our diverse exec team, I hope to use my event management and coordination skills and experiences to bring to our campus a range of diverse and meaningful events to act as a space to facilitate these conversations. This club is made up of a group of like minded individuals who believe it is important to have these tough conversations and we hope to create an environment which encourages one to feel safe to be able to express such vulnerability.

Today we celebrated our favourite day!
Happy Children's day to our beautiful Tamariki.

Thank you Jess for the amazing balloon garlands. The children absolutely loved them.

We celebrated with baking, icing, ice-blocks and parachutes with some of the nursery parents.

We also celebrated a special birthday - Happy Birthday Jackson!
This coming fortnight we are celebrating quite a few birthdays :)

Last week Kimihia celebrated Chinese New Year and Korean New Year by learning about the Zodiac signs and the incoming year of the Ox.

We discovered what animal sign we were and asked our whanau about theirs.

We made a dragon with Jinny as well as some musical instruments and then we displayed them for our centre with a parade in the nursery garden.

It was lots of fun!

For Waitangi Day observed.

See you Tuesday!

This week we have been making the most of the super hot weather by spending time outside in the sprinklers, exploring the science behind ice and enjoying a yummy ice block on occasion!
We even had a chrysalis bought in and read about the lifecycle of a caterpillar.

At Kimihia we have been super fortunate to bring back kai for our tamariki.

We have been able to supply our tamariki with delicious, nutritious meals. We also get donations of more kai to donate to our families to take home!

What an amazing community where we all work together in partnership for the successes of our tamariki and their whanau.
