If school felt harder than it should have...and nobody could ever quite explain why...this is for you.
You weren’t lazy. You weren’t careless. You may simply have a learning difference that was never identified.
It’s never too late to find out.

Many children who struggle at school have an underlying learning difference that hasn’t yet been identified. This includes dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD); differences that affect how children read, write, process numbers, or understand and use language.
Some signs to look for:
→ Takes much longer than expected to complete reading or writing
→ Struggles to organise thoughts on paper, even when ideas are clear verbally
→ Finds maths concepts confusing in ways that don’t seem to improve
→ Has difficulty following multi-step instructions or keeping up in conversation
→ Seems frustrated with learning or says “I’m dumb” or similar
These aren’t behaviour problems. They’re often signals worth exploring.
Have you noticed any of these in your child?

Yes to this!
Every student is more than their challenges.
A strengths-based approach does not deny difficulty or minimise need. Instead, it ensures that a student’s identity is not defined by their struggles. When we intentionally notice strengths, interests, and capabilities, we create pathways for confidence, engagement, and hope.
BSEM reminds us to ask not only “What support is needed?” but also “What strengths can we build from?” Because what we focus on grows.

Early bird registrations close 1 June!

Spend a morning with the Learning Disabilities Association of New Zealand at our mini conference in Auckland on Saturday, 4 July.
Many educators understand the complexity that sits beneath the Simple View of Reading. LDANZ has long supported evidence-informed approaches to the decoding side of reading, and this year’s mini conference turns the focus toward the language comprehension side of the equation.
The LDANZ “Language is Learning” Mini Conference explores current research and emerging understandings about language, literacy, and learning difficulties.
Whether you work directly with learners, support teachers and schools, or want to deepen your understanding of language and learning, this conference is for you.
Morning tea is included, with time to connect, network, and continue the conversation with others in the field.
Spaces are limited. Register now: Early bird tickets are only $30.

I often see ‘dyslexia’ used as catch all term for language and literacy challenges. We need to understand where the difficulty sits so the support and intervention can be effective.
Is it a literacy or language challenge? Is it both?
Get in touch to find out.
